i need some help and i dont know much about laptops.

old laptop is pretty slow and i wanted to start by upgrading his HDD to a 1TB one.

I found a Samsung 1TB 2.5inch. but my question is, how will i transfer all the data and the OS to the new one? im stuck. please help

Solution
Okey, so then all you would need to do would be to plug in the two HDD into your computer and transfer the data across. You may or may not need to format the SSD first, but that is a simple matter of right clicking it under the "My Computer" window and clicking format. You'll want to select the NTFS file system. Make sure to de-select "quick format" as that is only for a disk that has been formatted previously.

I am just wondering why you think that installing a new 1TB hard drive will speed up his laptop? If the laptop is fairly old, many of its components will contribute to the slow speed (Type of RAM, CPU, motherboard, type of interface for HDD, etc.) If you evaluate all of those things, you may find that the best and most affordable way to proceed is to buy a new laptop. Nice laptops are pretty cheap these days. Even a brand new HDD won't do much to speed up the system. A SSD will help a lot, though, even if the interface is still SATA II. Then again, you could just put the cost of that SSD toward a new laptop.

Well there are some free clone software out there and if you buy a retail box HD it should come with a utility though you will need a way to attach then together so you might want to pick up a sata to USB device they run 15-20 in the us.

However if its slow and he not really using that much space don't go with the 1TB HD. Pick up a 240MB SSD drive that will speed things up and probably will be way more noticable than just more space.

so the first the step would be to attach both the old and new hdd to my rig then the software will clone the old laptop hdd to the new one? or is it more complicated than that? seriously im stuck.

1. A new 1TB HDD will not make it faster
2. The clone/migration thing usually works. Usually. When it doesn't, it can be a real bear to fix.
3. Find out why it is slow before buying any parts.

Not enough RAM?
Too much junk in Startup?
Virus?

Are any of the following applicable to your situation?

1) The laptop has a second bay for a secondary hard drive?

2) You have a secondary computer with more than one available SATA ports inside?

3) You have an external 2.5" drive bay?

If you don't have any of these, you need to, as you will not be able to migrate data between the hard drives if you cannot connect both simultaneously.
