I built a pc and accidentally installed windows 7 32 bit instead of 64 bit and when I tried to install 64 bit windows said their was no compatible drives to install it on because of the 32 bit version that's on the hard drive.

Could you post the specs of your rig? Make sure your motherboard can handle the 64 bit version as, if it is 32 bit bound, you will not be able to install 64.

Also, are you using the install disk or a usb thumb drive to attempt the install?

I was meaning format. Not like, "take a light, damp cloth and wipe swiftly", LOL.
I think it will automatically format the drive when you try to install 64-bit Windows 7. Make sure any documents you want to save are backed up, first.

Formatting is essentially like wiping. It is taking the main index of the hard drive and re-writing it, making the information on the drive un-readable and, thus, free for the installation process to commence.

So when you format, you are wiping the hard drive.
