Hi folks,

I recently bought a Powercolor R9 280 TurboDuo to go into my PC connected via my OCZ Modxtreme 600w PSU, as there was only 1 8 pin to 6 pin cable that came with it, I bought a 6pin splitter to go from the PSU to the 6 pin on the GPU and used the converter that came with it to hook up to the other 8 pin power connector on the GPU. It originally failed to even turn on, so I tried another combination of hooking up the cables and it powers on bit the GPU fans run at full whack, and according to my kilawatt plug, its drawing close to 700w!! Have I killed my PSU? I've tried my old GPU and that runs 100% as well.

Also I don't get any sort of image when its powered on!

More about : possibly killed psu powercolor 280 turboduo

try any other gpu and check if system turns on . if not so there is something bad happened to your PSU

I tried my old GPU and that runs at full whack too, is it most likely to be the PSU? Not the motherboard?

Unfortunately I don't have a spare PSU that'll power up my rig, I'll pick one up tomorrow and report back, just hope I've not taken the motherboard out

It's a very poor power supply , time for an upgrade.

Would you say it's more likely to be the PSU SR-71 Blackbird?

I think it could be but not 100% on that , I would get a Seasonic made power supply and go from there , at least then you have reliable and stable [power.

You should not be using any converter cables that came with the graphics card.

Drawing close to 700W tells me that you've created a short circuit.

The OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W (OCZ600MXSP) comes with two modular PCI Express supplementary power cables. One of the modular cables has a 150W (6+2)-pin red PCIe power connector on it and the other modular cable has a 75W 6-pin PCIe power connector on it that plug into the graphics card's PCIe power connectors. Both modular cables have an 8-pin red modular interface connector that plugs into the PSU's red modular panel connectors.

OCZ's power supply division and PC Power and Cooling have been bought out by FirePower Technology.

I have since tried to power the PC back up with my old GPU and the 6 pin but it's still running at 100%? And I bought the PC originally second hand and upgraded it as necessary myself, the PSU being something that hasn't been upgraded since the PC was built, maybe 6 years ago? Could the combination of its age and incorrect cabling have tipped it over the edge?

Unfortunately when I bought the PC I was only given the 6pin modual cable, and I have searched around for a replacement 6+2 but couldn't find anything close enough, which leads me to wonder if the cabling I had in place (splitter and converter) were incorrectly set up and as ko888 has stated, shorted it. Now this leads me to wonder has it shorted just the PSU or the mobo too? I will be picking a PSU tomorrow with wired cables to see if it's the issue, don't worry it's a corsair CX750, so nothing too cheap and nasty!

The thermistor that is used to control the PSU's cooling fan speed can be stuck so that the fan ends up always running at its maximum speed.

Sorry, just to reiterate what I was meaning, the GPU fan is running at 100%, the PSU fan seems to be relatively normal

Update: Purchased a new PSU and hook it up, still doesn't boot, tried switching and swapping Ram sticks, no change, even tried removing it from the case onto cardboard and posting with only CPU and 24pin connected, no such luck, also I have tried all this listening for any beeps. I've checked the plug and it's now only drawing 55watts?

Solution : Motherboard was dead, likely due to incorrect wiring up on the GPU and surged the mobo.
