According to my Laptop the headset i have is not a headset and in fact only headphones and the microphone is non-existent i cannot use the microphone and it is not recognized on the laptop although the microphone is functioning.#

I have an Asus X550D for use while away from my tower which has only a single hybrid audio jack, can support either sound output or microphone input, i also recently bought a new headset after breaking my steelseries which has both the need for audio and microphone and so i purchased an audio jack splitter to accommodate both the microphone and headphones on the headset but the problem i am having is the laptop does not pick up that there is a microphone although the headphones work fine. I went to recording devices and i only have the built in microphone for the laptop which is sub-par at best.

Do you mean your headphone outputs what you are saying into the mic a little bit (so it sounds like you can hear yourself). That might just take place in the headphone's own processing so there is a chance that the mic still isn't working properly. It won't be the actual mic cause it's working but could be the mic cable or something along the line. I still suggest trying it on something else because maybe the laptop mic port was DOA.

try using the audio setup (2 3.5mm into 1 3.5mm) on something like your phone to see if it records the audio and plays back music. If it works then you know there is an issue with the laptop. If not then you might have a faulty cable or the wrong type of splitter (doesn't combine mic and audio but just duplicates the audio)

I know the headset works as i can hear myself slightly through the headset when the mic is open it's just not showing up on my laptop which i would assume also works fine as i only bought it a few days ago
