Just in terms of benchmarks and comparisons, which is better?

Who wins if mantle is taken into account? Should it? Why?

Generally the 770 will perform better overall. Some games will favor one over the other, and the differences in performance on a neutral game title are small enough that you can honestly decide which one you want more and go with that model.

You mentioned Mantle, but don't forget the new drivers from nVidia...so I'd say the playing field is once again level and only comes down to the raw performance of the cards themselves. Either one is a good choice, but in general a 770 "does" outperform the 280x.

both are so close to each other that one would never notice the difference in gaming except for a few titels that favor nvidia or amd. amd does have mantel that accelerates a few games like battlefield 4. the 4gb version of the 770 is generally unnecessary unless you plan on getting a second 770 to run in sli. the 2gb version is much cheaper. as of now, the 280x appears to be in stock and cheaper by about $20-30 over a "2gb" 770. its much less expensive than a 4gb 770.

not sure where your finding any decent price on a 4gb 770

the evga model at least on newegg is $400

but you would only be a few bucks away from a much more powerful r9-290

I am going to go SLI with the cards. Which of the two after the multi card setup will be better?

well if your going to go sli then the nvidia option is much better. but my single 780 classy at 1350ghz comes very close to sli 770s at least in benchmarks like unigine valley/heaven and 3dmark. in real world gaming, especially in games where sli scaling is down as low as 65-70%, im equal to or faster.

you may want to consider saving up for one of the new 6gb 780s that will be coming out and maybe get a good deal on one. then a year from now you can grab a second one and have 4k capable gpu horsepower.
