So I recently built my own pc with a budget and its been running smoothly so far, very pleased with how well it performs. It's definitely not a super computer and I'm looking for upgrade options in the future but there is still one problem which seems to keep occurring and that's the temps and noise of the system.

So right now I am using the corsair H100i on my CPU and it does a fairly good job of cooling along with the links software that I'm using with it. I have the 2 fans that some with the radiator connected with a y-splitter to the pump and my 2 case fans, one front intake and one rear exhaust, connected with another y-splitter. With links I can control each fan individually and I've set custom curves for each.

What seems to be the problem is the motherboard temps, at idle they are around 45 degrees and under load they can quickly reach the low 70's, these just seem to high for the type of cooling I've got on this. My CPU itself seems okay and idling between 20 and 30 degrees but that also gets very hot under load reaching the 50's pretty quickly. These are all under stock setting in the BIOS, I have set the voltages and frequencies to stock manually so nothing can mess with them and set it all up for overclocking. I was hoping to overclock with this cooler but I don't seem to have much headroom for temperatures, especially on the motherboard. I don't know whether this is just because of the FX series in general or something else is wrong but I was expecting more out of a dual fan radiator like the H100i. I've used Arctic Cooling MX-4 paste using the pea method in the middle which seems to have worked okay but I'm not sure if I should reseat the cooler again. I've read lots of forums on this but haven't see n a definite solution for what I'm working with so any help would be appreciated.

This is my system:
AMD FX 8350 with Arctic Cooling MX-4
ASUS m5a99fx Pro r2.0
H100i on the top fan grill with 2 fans in pull into the case
Nvidia GTX 760
Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz 2x4GB RAM
Corsair RM 850 PSU
WD 1TB Blue HDD
All of this is in a Corsair 300r case with a windowed side panel (Extra fan mounts on the side panel if needed for more cooling)

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll look into getting one. Do you know if cooling the VRMs will help with the CPU temps at all or just let me have a generally quieter PC because the fans will not have to spin up so quickly?

Will this not mean pulling warm air through the radiator itself?

Okay, that sounds like a good option then. I've got the ASUS DirectCU II version so it's using air from the case and spits it out back into the case when its done. I'm thinking of upgrading to the GTX 800 series when they come out for desktops, should I be looking for a rear exhausting one? Thanks for the help by the way :)

An FX-8350 in the 50s under load ain't to shabby. I suspect the GTX760 is really heating things up -- they can get quite toasty with reference cooling.

edit: The Asus cooling should knock temps down nicely but it's still exhausting in the case. I've never tried one, but maybe one of those PCIe slot coolers beside the video card can help exhaust some heat.

I would look for a rear exhausting card for sure. I recently got an MSI R9 290 (non-reference) and it dumps the hot air right into my case, which really elevated my CPU temps. Turning most of my case fans to exhaust helped alleviate that issue.

Well I'll be looking out for a rear exhausting one then. That seems to be what's happening in mine too then, I may buy 2 fans for my side panel which I could use to pull the air away from the GPU because they are places right in front of it, do you think this would mean I could keep my H100i pulling fresh air in to keep the CPU cooler? Problem is they just look a bit ugly from the outside if they're stuck onto the side panel, it's worth it though if it keeps things cool.

Placing the side fans to exhaust (pulling air away from the GPU) is exactly what I did. My fans have red leds so its not too bad looking. If you an, just get some more aesthetically pleasing fans.

Leaving your H100i in its current configuration will result in the VRMs always being hot; they are just to close to the radiator.

That sounds like the thing to do then, I'll get some nice fans and place them in front of the gpu to keep that cool and just switch the fans round on the radiator so the VRMs stay cool. With the 2 radiator fans being turned round that will leave me with 3 exhausts and 1 intake until I get some more fans so can I switch round the rear exhaust to an intake too so its a bit more even?

No, leave the rear as an exhaust. Having only one intake is fine, as long as its at the front of the case and its pushing sufficient CFMs.

Put it this way, when you as a human get hot, your body perspires, and if you hit that perspiration with a fan, it makes you feel coo, right? Well, electronics don't sweat, so running air over them doesn't add that much benefit. It just pushes the hot air around in the case.

I am NOT saying its not beneficial to have air run over electronics. What I am saying, is that in some cases (like yours and mine) pulling hot air AWAY from the electronics is a much better solution.

Ahhhhhhhh, I see now. That makes a lot of sense, thanks for that :) I'll leave the rear fan as an exhaust as well then, looks like things are almost sorted now. Well it seems like you solved my problem so thank you very much for that, wasn't expecting replies this quickly either so good job!

I've just made the changes to the radiator fans in the top of my case so that now the fans are pulling air out of the case through the radiator. Running prime 95 for 15 minutes now with now problems and the CPU cores are at 45 degrees under load which is really good and the motherboard temps have gone from 75+ degrees down to around 60 which is much better than I was even expecting. I can tell the fans are working to move the heat away because the area on top of the radiator which sits above the VRMs is much warmer than the rest. Thank you CooLWoLF for helping me out, now I can game in silence with my coooool machine :)

Just to confirm, I have now got a new h100i becuase my old one stopped working which is an exhaust out the top, I have one fan at the back as an exhaust, one at the front as an intake as well. I also got a new windforce 780ti which is dumping hot air in the case yet as of now my temps under stock are very good. The CPU gets to about 35C running Prime 95 and the VRMS are now only at about 50C which is't bad.

The secret change to get the VRMs cooler is that I took the mini fan on the stock AMD heatsink and rested it against the coolant pumps on top of my graphics card pointing directly at the VRM heatsink. This has working surprisingly well for such a small fan and I could only suggest doing something like it if anyone has the same problem.
