You have to go into Control Panel in Windows and manually change the Hz-setting for the monitor.
It's set to 60 Hz default.
At least it was for my new screen (Asus 144 Hz screen).

What does it do when you try to select 120hz?

Is it in 3D mode? If it is, it's probably limited to 6zhz unless 3d is turned off.

Btw, the person on the thread you linked fixed his problem.
EDIT: I reread the thread. His problem was that he had been using an adapter. Are you using any sort of adapter?

Anyways, if it works in 3D at 60hz, it should work at 120hz in 2D. I'd try a displayport cable, as that is what was required for 3d when the monitor was new. AMD added dual link DVI-D support later, which might mean Windows just does not know it can run it at 120hz.

Another option is to uncheck the "hide resolutions that are not supported" box.

I read somewhere that some monitors won’t run above 60hz using HDMI/DVI, you need use the display port. I will try to find that article again.

HDMI won't support 120hz, but dual link DVI will. I am currently running @ 144hz with a DL DVI-D.

Avoid adapters at all costs. Just get a displayport cable that goes directly from the PC to the monitor without an adapter.

Why are you using adapters? Adapters, even when they appear to be dual link, rarely are.

You should be able to connect the monitor directly from a DP port on the video card to the DP port on the monitor. Or get a mini version if needed.

The person who got it working on the thread you linked go it working with a dp cable. Not a dp to dvi cable, which will not work, as it will be single link in 99% of cables. 120hz does not function through adapters in most cases.

Did you buy that monitor used? I believe those monitors used to come with displayport cables when new.
