This suddenly happened. It used to shut down and startup perfectly.
Startup: As XP is starting it now displays the Log on to Windows screen with an additional message below:
"The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct then type your password again."
Does anyone know what "domain" refers to here? The first screen window asks for a user name and password. No mention of "domain".
I type in my user name (leave password blank), hit enter and everything starts up fine.
When I want to Shut Down I have 3 options: Shut Down, Restart and Standby. None work. It looks like its shutting down, all windows close and just the mouse cursor is visible or sometimes the monitor goes blank and it can be revived with hitting the mouse or keyboard (both USB) if put into Standby.
I tried using Task Manager and that doesn't work even if I close off all possible running programs individually.
I remember changing some setting somewhere that allows the system to be woken by using the USB mouse or keyboard (thought it was the bios) but now I can't find it. I've searched the bios and Control Panel numerous times. Definitely not in Power Options. The odd thing though is everything is blank in Power Options. I can't do anything there. So that's got to be related. I wonder if something in services.msc could have triggered this.

Solution
Sounds like you messed around with the system a bit too much, you got a virus or you have corrupt Windows files.

If you get a domain option, that means the computer was moved from a Workgroup to a Domain. It also sounds like you have auto logon set but the wrong info entered into the registry keys.

You may want to backup your files and do a clean setup of Windows here.
