Hi there. I am reviving an old Dell Dimension 2400. Right now I am using a 40GB HD, which works fine. But one of the HD I put in is a challenge. I can store information on it, but it cannot boot. It's a Maxtor PATA 200 GB. So far I have installed a Windows OS; files are copied, but then the disk can't boot. I checked, the files are there. I repaired the startup. Still no boot. I tried that several times, even deleting the partition, reformatting. So I decided to install a Linux system. Same story. All the files are on it, but it just will not boot. It hangs after the Bios turns over to the OS, then after a while the BIOS returns a message 'retry boot' or 'system setup'. The 200GB was hooked up the same way, as master. If this happened just in Windows, I'd understand. But also Linux. Weird... Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

It's not weird at all, this is an old drive that's going to have bad sectors or failing heads. throw it in the trash and get a new drive.

Thanks for the tip, TyrOd. You would think by doing a full format it would mark bad sectors. I did that a couple times. Still no results. Still will not boot to that drive after installing the OS. I have even reduced the size of the partition.
