hello friends
i had 2 gb of RAM before. Then i thought that it is bad for gaming. So, i decided to add 2 gb more RAM and make it 4 gb RAM. i had a ddr3 ram so i bought the same one .there were two ram slots in my cpu so i placed the new ram in slot no second .at first the computer started but it was showing only 2 gb of ram .then again i placed both the rams in the same place but my pc was not starting .and finally i removed the old ram from the slot no 1 and placed the new ram in slot 1 and my pc started!now,my question is that what happened to my older ram because it was running fine before i placed the new ram in slot 2 and if i have to place a new ram where should i place it to add more memory?

you might have gotten something that is a different speed (1333mhz vs 1600mhz for example) or something with different timings 9-9-9-21, 8-8-8-24.

You typically want to buy in full 'matched' sets (full kits for what you want) to avoid issues like these.

Another factor could be ram that is not compatible with your main/motherboard .... you usually want to check what is referred to as qualified vendor lists (in your board's manual, or usually available on the manufacturer's site)..

something also could have happened to the dimm slot, or one fo the ram sticks

Also, if you have a 32-bit operating system, it may not recognize 4GB RAM. If this is the case, you will need to upgrade to 64-bit. If your CPU does not support 64-bit, you will have to upgrade your CPU and possibly your motherboard, too.
