Asus P9X79 Pro "Forgetting" PCI Express Cards

Hi

I have a server I have built around the Asus P9X79 Pro Mobo, for running ESXI, however I don't believe this problem is OS.

The server has a cheap PCI/E GFX card, 2x HP NC382T PCI/E Dual NICs, another PCI/E NIC, and a Dell PERC 6i installed.

I'm running BIOS 4607.

This server has been running rock solid for ages, with the only reboots being ESXi Updates, the odd powercut and BIOS updates. None of these have happened recently.

The normal POST for this machine is that firstly the banner for the PERC appears, then 4x NIC network boot banners (1 for each port on each 382T). Then ESXi boots.

Yesterday, I lost connectivity to the server, so I rebooted it. When it came up, ESXi couldn't see any NIC apart from the onboard one.

I rebooted the machine several times and noticed that various cards were not displaying their banners. Sometimes the PERC wouldn't show its banner, sometimes only one NIC would, sometimes the PERC but no NICs etc etc.

Inline with the above, ESXi would sometimes see some NICs, no NICs, no harddisks etc etc.

It appears that on POST, the system is just not seeing all the devices now. Most of the time it's not picking up all the NICs.

I've tried resetting the RTC via the button, upgrading BIOS to 4608, resetting defaults etc, but the problem still remains. I'm not overclocking.

Any idea why it would suddenly stop seeing all my PCI/E cards, and only seeing some?

Cheers

Thanks for replying.

I can try taking cards out, and moving them around to see if that's the issue I guess. I'd understand this if a particular card was always missing or a particular slot, but it appears to be random.

I had issues with my bios after a bios update and it would randomly not see my RAID card or just not want to boot to it if it was recognized. Removing the bios battery for a minute and reseating it fixed my issue. Hope this helps....UEFI sucks JMO.
