Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forums, but I have a few issues that definitely have become quite irritating.

Internet Issues

So, ever since I've fixed my computer I've been having a pretty irritating issue. My internet will go out every 45-55 minutes for no reason, even when my house internet is still working. My internet wireless card like resets or crashes or something. The only way I'm able to fix the internet is by restarting the computer or going to:

Open Network and Sharing > Change Adapter Settings > Right Clicking: "Wireless Network Connection"

and then disabling and enabling it again. My ethernet cable wont work either, when I plug it in it doesn't do anything. The ethernet cable is functioning correctly on other computers, but not on mine.

What could this be and how can I fix this?

Date&Time Issues

Again, since I've fixed my computer my date & time wont keep up with the actual date & time. If I set it to the correct date & time it eventually falls behind and repeats the same hour until I fix it again. For example, as of this post it's April 18th but my computer is showing April 9th. Obviously an issue.

I've tried fixing it but nothing has worked. Also, whenever I go to change the date & time internet time settings it says I don't have permission to access it.

What could this be and how can I fix this?

Other Information

In case you guys are wondering why my computer needed to be fixed, the internal power supply died. I simply bought a new one and replaced it. I didn't touch/add any other component that could conflict with the internet/date&time.

I look forward to reading your replies. Thank you for your time and I'm happy to be here on the forums!

Do some basics first then tell us the results:

Download and run SPECCY, copy and paste the first tab to confirm your idle temps
Download and run MSI Afterburner, run some of the games, what confirmed temps are you getting while in game?
Open Computer, Can Air dust out the bunnies and use paint brush on the vents, coolers, fans, etc. if you haven't in the past 30 days.

Did you install all Windows Updates? Including options except BING? Check them and repeat till ALL are installed.

Download and run Slim Drivers, install all the latest updates but you don't need to reboot until you do the last update

Remove whatever AV your using and go to www.filehippo.com and download AVAST! or AVG and do a full system scan - this repeatedly has resolved alot of people issue relying on MS Essentials.

Download Malwarebytes do a full system scan (AV doesn't pick up alot of malware) - this resolved almost ALL other similiar posts to date as most had Malware the AV didn't pick up.
Repeat the AV/Malware scans till the system comes up clean.

Please do each step and provide the feedback on each. Many times one of these tend to suddenly "resolve instantly" the issues.

Other Information

- I always clean my computer every 3 months. I've cleaned it last about a week ago. I'm more than positive there are no dust bunnies.
- I ran a full computer scan twice on Malwarbytes.
- I ran a full computer scan with Microsoft Security Essentials.
- I ran a full computer scan with AVG.
- I ran CCleaner.
- I ran AVG's PC Analyzer Cleaner.
- I ran AVG's PC TuneUp.

I will see how the internet/date&time keep up. I will respond shortly after this post to give you an update.

  • You can't have TWO Antivirus software running in a computer at the same time. This causes all sorts of odd havoc. As I noted in my instructions you need to remove MSE before installing the AVG. At this point please uninstall MSE.
Was there any detected ,malicious materials when you ran the scans?
You did not indicate using Slim Drivers to ensure ALL drivers are up to date, that may not be 'observable' through normal methods. Please download and run Slim Drivers
You did not indicate if you install ALL WINDOWS updates AND OPTIONS (except BING). Please do so.
.

You indicated multiple problems, these actions will NOT automatically fix the date / time, but ensure any solutions we DO implement are not hampered because of underlying other causes that would hamper any efforts to fix the issues.

Your specs are modern (oh Alienware eh? Which model?) so this isn't a immediate indicator that we are talking end of life hardware just dying dramatically.
Your temps are nice and fine, so there appears to be no overheating
Your cleanliness helps ensure nothing 'funky' got inside crossing wires.

Now we have a baseline (and after the items noted above are resolved) we should have a proper setup system, updated, and ensured that nothing arbitrary just being 'dumb' to the computer.

Have you clicked the Clock / Calendar int he bottom right , ensured it is set to the right time zone and synchs?
If the issue is still happening you will need to replace the 'watch battery' on the motherboard. Unplug the power from the wall, wait 15 MINUTES (no less then this) then remove the watch battery on the motherboard and replace it. This keep the settings for BIOS and the date accurate. Some viruses/malware will also cause the same 'issue', even if the battery is replaced.

How is the Wireless issue now (need to have SLIM DRIVERS complete before answering this)?
If this is still a issue, even with all the patches and updates, then the next things would be to look at the wireless environment as well as the router. The first test to eliminate the PC is to wire to the router, do you still get drops? If so then the router is failing or ISP has issues with your service. The next steps would be to scan the area and ensure a neighbor isn't also broadcasting on the same channel, basically depreciating the signal quality. We can go into those steps later when ABOVE is all completed first.

I see. Well I originally did not have AVG and only used Malwarbytes and MSE. I've uninstalled MSE now. After doing so are there any other tests I should run? In response to your second question, all of my computer scans came up clean and did not show any threats.

As I forgot to mention, I did run Slim Drivers and installed all needed updates as well as restarting my computer to ensure those updates were fully installed. I also made sure that I didn't have any needed Windows updates.

I have an Alienware X51 tower, it's suited me quite well until the past few months. In response to your question about if my clock/calender is in sync. Whenever I go to Change Date and Time Settings > Internet Time > Change Settings I get an error that reads:

Unable to continue.
You do not have permission to perform this task. Please contact your computer administrator for help.

I did read somewhere that I might have to replace the battery on the motherboard. Do you know where I could buy one if available and how would I go about knowing which ones will work on my motherboard?

I'm almost positive that the internet issue is computer-sided and not sided on my internet/internet provider. All my other devices (laptops, tablets, phones) are always connected, even when my computer is not. As I said before, the only way to fix the internet issue is to restart the internet card in the Network settings. This indicates that the issue is the PC.

Thank you for your help!

In answer to first,
A) are you on a Domain (aka Work?) based network?
B) IS this account your using a Admin acct? If not then you can't do alot of what we ask on here, you need to be the Admin on the computer for alot of our steps on here (which makes me wonder how you installed or uninstalled anything then if your NOT Admin).
C) If this is YOUR (not someone else's) Personal computer, AND you are the ONLY user of it, yet do not have admin rights over changing the clock, and this is only a few months old, to me this sounds very much like a infection on the system has taken over your computer, potentially a RootKit since nothing was picked up by AVG nor Malwarebytes on their scans. If this is the case, the only suggestion would be a full wipe with DBAN and reinstall from the Alienware DVDs. Yes you lose all data because you can't backup the data as it will bring along the infection that will just put you back in the same position (yes infections can carry over to your thumbdrives, etc.).
D) If you follow my steps you will see the specific watch battery type it is, just head down to Walmart with it in hand and get another, simple. BUT that this is a BRAND NEW SYSTEM, the battery would NOT be a issue, in fact is be damn impossible. IF C is not resolving it, you should contact Dell for support, as this is still a underwarranty system (they will have you do the EXACT same steps before looking at hardware / other issues so I am saving you time by telling them you did a full system wipe then reinstall to Factory and you still have the issues).

As for Wifi, See C and D above. Normally a virus will affect these very things, but the only solution (clean results) would be to start over. If start over doesn't resolve the problem as 'software' then there is a hardware failure and under warranty it shouldn't be failing, and needs to be supported.
