Hey guys. I'm on a mission to find a good but quiet gaming keyboard (preferably one that has illuminated keys). The sound doesn't bother me but as my setup is in the living room i've been getting some grief over my typing.
I don't really have a preference on brand but something reputable would be a bonus. The only reputable quiet mechanical keyboard with illuminated keys I can find at the moment is the Razer Black Widow Ultimate Stealth.

Cherry mx mechanical keyboards are all the same volume, the color switch will determine different characteristics of feeling and sound. This link below, is a great info grabber for mechanical switches. But the quietest possible "mechanical" switch are Topre switches, they are considerably more expensive, but are said to have a more refined feel and design then traditional Cherry MX switches. Or another good quiet keyboard would just be a rubber dome.

I would recommend buying a mechanical keyboard because they have a dedicated switch on each key which has been soldered on and is a crucial component for gamers as you don't even need to press the keys fully in order for it to register. personally I would recommend the cherry mx brown switches because they are good for typing and only require 45 grams of force in order for it to actuate

if silence is what you need... the quietest keyboards are membrane type not mechanical. logitech has many nice keyboards but there are various other brands which have good offerings as well.

not all cherry mx switches are the same in terms of loudness. its also possible to put a rubber damper under the keys to reduce this. on wasd keyboards website under o-ring sound dampeners there is a video for sound comparisions http://support.wasdkeyboards.com/

edit: also if you do alot of typing you do not want reds, blacks or clears as they are not good for typing (basically they are just a key on a spring). blues or browns are more ideal for this. blues are a bit loud so if you dont want the clicking then i would go browns.
