i5 4670k Overclocking 4.2ghz -> 4.4ghz

Now i have a new issue...

So, I increased from a stable 4.2 to 4.4 and increased the voltage from 1.2v to 1.22v and it BSOD before I could even stress test. Why is this?

Its confusing to me because how could i be stable at 4.2 and 1.2 and then only increased a little its not only NOT stable, but it BSOD's. Weird...

Also, after it BSOD's and reboots it doesnt show the BIOS and I see a black screen with text that says settings have been reset and press f1 or f2 to contiue etc.....however it doesn't work with my mechanical keyboard, and I have to unplug it, and plug in a $19 one from target in order for me to be able to press f1 to continue. Very odd.

I am afraid to attempt more OC with this outcome only pushing it a little further. What is everyone's take on this?

Very frustrating, Ive felt that pain before. Unfortunately, some chips OC better than others...though 4.4Ghz is not pushing that envelope. Are you keeping voltage settings to auto? What other BIOS OC settings are you tweaking (if any)?

OMFG LITERALLY right as I posted this, my system BSOD'd.

All I did after the first reboot was re-overclock my system back to 4.2 and 1.2v as it had been stable at before I tried to increase to 4.4ghz.

What is going on? I'm very worried.

Thanks for the reply! Volt was on static, not adaptive. I set it to 1.22v, before I had been running stably at 4.2 and 1.20v. Maybe not enough volts to support 4.4? I read that you should set to static to test, and then turn back to adaptive for normal use etc. I have an MSI board, and I have been changing these settings within MSI Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. There is only a "Default" setting besides setting it to a custom voltage.

Also I may note that I had my RAM set to 1600 which was "overclocked" even though my ram is stated to be 1600. Thanks for the help. Currently I am running at 4.0ghz with default voltage. hwmonitor seems to show it pushes it up to 1.255v under load. Also note I have a h100i, so temps have not really been a concern.
 
I suggest you run at the "XMP" settings for now which should be 3.9GHz CPU and 1600MHz memory I believe.

Then, run:
a) Memtest www.memtest.org to ensure DDR3 memory stability, and
b) Prime95 and/or the Intel CPU diagnostic to test the CPU

After that, I suggest:
1) Manually raising each core Multiplier to "40" and retest,
2) Repeat for "41" and "42" (doubt you'll get "43")

That's all, just manually change the Multiplier which should leave all the Intel Power Management protocols in place. It may be your Motherboard that is causing your issues by not supplying a stable voltage so by doing it this way and NOT raising the voltage you might get a slight overclock to work. It will also run cooler in case heat was a small issue (as said all CPU's are slightly different so there could be a localized flaw in transistor configuration that is affected more by an increase in heat and/or voltage.)

*FYI, even at stock speed that CPU is unlikely to be a bottleneck in games unlike the AMD CPU's so overclocking won't gain you much.

Cool. I'd keep the voltage at auto and try to bring up the clock again...if your memory is rated at 1600Mhz, that shouldnt be the issue.

what about the dynamic processor input voltage? i dont know much about that setting....

I am honestly in disbelief, because I just tried even going from 4 to 4.1 with default voltage, which went up to 1.265 and I almost BSOD, it stalled and I ctrl alt del and it got me to the task manager and I stopped aida64. I went back down to 4.0ghz.

So I must really just not have a stable chip for OC. Which is really disappointing. I got it to boot windows with 1.25v and 4.4ghz while doing the settings in the BIOS, not the intel program, but it restarted randomly after a few minutes under aida64.

Is it worth trying to get a new one? I only got this one a couple weeks ago from newegg, i just built my PC.

Yep, if you can replace it (free) then definitely try. I got lucky with my 3570K...but will be as particular as I can when I do a new socket/chip replacement.

You might try upping the voltage to about 1.245 volts for 4.4GHz, my chip runs stable at that setting. Depending on your CPU cooler, you might try going to around 1.260-270 volts for 4.4GHz, I had mine at 1.275 volts before fine-tuning my OC.

Disclaimer: Yes I am fully aware that no two CPUs will OC the same, but it's still worth a try to up the voltage if you have the cooling power to do so. Just try and stay under 1.3 volts.
