I've been told I should use heat sink glue for my CPU and its fan.

I've never used it before on any of my old PCs that I've randomly built when I was younger and never had a problem with the CPU over heating or what not.

So how important is it? Is it a must or can I get away without it? Those computers were never important nor a proper gaming PC while this one is so I want to be careful and safe.

EDIT: Incase this helps I have an i7-3770 CPU no idea what the fan is, sorry.

Solution
...good lord, who in the world keeps telling people that it's glue? It's not glue. It will not make anything stick somewhere.

What it is is thermal paste. Its job is to fill in the micro-cracks in between the heatsink and the CPU, giving much better heat transfer.

You probably DID use it on your old PCs - all stock coolers come with thermal paste pre-applied.

Yes, you want it. It will make your temperatures much better AND will make sure your CPU doesn't get worn from metal on metal contact.

Yes, you'll need to use isopropyl alcohol to remove the old paste, and then apply a rice-sized grain in the center.

That being said, lemme be clear - that's not something you do with case fans. That's something to do with the metal heatsink that cools your CPU.
