why 2400mhz is too much for gaming?

In another post I heard that 2400 might be too much for gaming, that 1600mhz memory are enough, but my question is why?

What kind of apps benefit from such kind of memory?

For gaming 1600 is fine as gaming really only uses DRAM as a data conduit from CPU to GPU, with faster sticks you might pick up a few FPS 2-5, but generally that's it, faster DRAM shines when rendering video, working with images, running VMs, large data sets, CAD, muti-tasking, etc
