Laptop Network Connections not working

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium x64 laptop from a friend's family. They had some kids over who were playing with the laptop, and totally messed it up. Since the kids were over, the laptop has had absolutely no internet access.

After investigating, I found that the laptop was not detecting the wireless network. I checked the obvious, such as making sure that the wireless was enabled etc.
I checked the device manager and found that all the network devices had the yellow triangle next to them. This included the WAN miniports, the wireless card, and the NIC. I tried to run a system restore, but after restarting, I received a notification that the restore was not successful because of some registry problem. I tried multiple restore points going back a few months, and they all had the same problem. I was able to uninstall the drivers for the wireless card and reinstalled them(downloaded them with another computer from the manufacturer website), but this did not help.
I removed and tried to reinstall the default Windows drivers for the different miniports that were showing errors, but when I select the driver (from the included drivers on the system from manufacturer (Microsoft)) and try to install it, it said it can't find the file specified. (or something to that effect. I don't have it with me at the moment, so i might be mistaken)

I am not sure what to do at this point, but I'd rather not reinstall Windows if I don't absolutely have to.
If you need any more information, just let me know what is needed and I will try to supply it.

Thanks

***UPDATE***

I followed the guide at http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/55611-fix-broken-wan-miniports

In the device manager under network adapters the WAN miniports are visible again(some improvement finally)
However, they all have the yellow warning triangle next to them. If I open it, under device status I get the following message
"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31)"
If I right click the 'device' and tell it to update the drivers, (searching automatically for updated driver software) I get the following message:
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempted to install it.
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
The system cannot find the file specified."
