I'm a newbie when it comes to the audiophile world. I might not even fully appreciate the best pick you guys suggest. I was also wondering if headphones that provide 7.1 surround have worse quality and what features to avoid in the future. I know I'm asking a lot, but I will greatly appreciate an introduction to quality headphones.

I recently bought some desktop speakers and what I've read you never get a real 7.1 sound-effect from only 2 speakers and also, the sound suffers somewhat from the speakers trying to mimic a 7.1 system. I've had no experience with 2-way speakers/headphones that are said to be 7.1 or 5.1 but from what I read I avoided them.
Regarding headphones I bought Sony MDR-7506 a few years back and they sound REALLY good both for music and gaming. The only downside having them connected to the computer is the long cord but I guess that it depends on how you view it whether it's a pro or con :)
So my vote for the MDR-7506

Just get a pair of turtle beach headphones, they are very high quality and have a low cost. They are also avalible almost everywhere.
