Toms,
Earlier this afternoon I downloaded a minecraft texture pack from planetminecraft called "Beautiful Life." It has since mysteriously disappeared from the website. My first sign that something was wrong was the fact it wasn't in .zip format. It was like an installer. Went ahead and ran it and nothing happened no installer, nothing, like 2 minutes laters I got a .dll error. Upon restarting my computer I had a "svchost.exe" trying to start up, and I had a svchost minecraft "creeper" logo in my %appdata% microsoft folder. That got my attention.
I ran my normal microsoft security essentials sweep and it found nothing. Poking around the web MSE has been getting poor reviews. I decided to try malwarebytes free. I have read it can run concurrently with MSE. Malwarebyes sure enough found malware in my %appdata% folder, quarantined it and removed it. Subsequent scans by malwarebytes are clean. Here are my questions:
1. Can I rest easy? Is Malwarebytes Free reputable?
2. I have a 240gb ssd boot drive along side 1tb mechanical drive. Do I need to secure erase them and zero them both out to be sure I nailed this virus? Thats not good for the ssd though?
3. Should I change my passwords?
4. Anyone heard of a texture pack virus for minecraft? Or something posing as a texture pack? Thank you.
