Hi all, im upgradeing my mb and cpu, at mo i have gigerbyte fm2 mb with amd athlon x4. im changeing to g1 sniper z87 and i7 1150 cpu, so i can sli gtx770, ive been told i have to format my hdd and reinstall windows 8, do i have to do this, couldn't i just uninstall all old Mb drivers, change hardware then reboot and install new drivers. if i have to format, how do u format the hdd your useing for os, because format is greyed out, do i have to boot windows from disc to do this, if so how? Im a noob to pc but im getting their with your help. The company where i bought the pc said because im moving from gigerbyte to gigerbyte mb and i have windows 8.1 theirs no need to do fresh reinstall, because windows 8.1 has some sort of thing that sorts hardware change out, but im thinking the cpu upgrade is a big one, athlonx4 to i7 4th gen. i only have photos to copy if i have to format so ill do that to flash drive, i have windows disc full version and key code so no prob their. thankyou i seem to be getting different answers so any advice would be much thanked,

Why don't you trust the company you bought the PC from? Several members will recommend that you reinstall the OS, but that usually isn't necessary. It's up to you to decide if you prefer to reinstall the OS or not. Removing old drivers always is a good idea as it allows the OS to boot faster.

Ive yet to get a deffenate answer, its not i don't trust them, but to be honest people on this site seem to have a lot more knowledge about custom builds and upgrading. And they also said " u shouldn't have to reinstall os" not don't or do but shouldn't.

sounds like a fresh install is going to be the easiest fix here if all you have to recover is some photos.it may work if you uninstall all drivers and install new ones but compared to a fresh install this is more work and may or may not yield satisfactory results.

Most people prefer reinstalling the OS from fresh, but it's a major task if you already installed a lot of applications, etc.

I wouldn't reinstall (I rarely do), but be prepared to do it if you run into unexpected issues. Before replacing the CPU and motherboard, backup important files. Formatting the hard disk is an installation step; if you don't delete the old partitions and format the hard disk, then the Windows folder will be renamed as Windows.old (it can be deleted once the installtion is complete) and your old files will still be available. All applications have to be reinstalled if you reinstall the OS (usually not a major issue on a gaming system).

Yeah, i save photo to usb stick then power dwn change hardware, clean install, load drivers, Mb, then reinstall nividia experience, and gpu driver, then set pc settings and reload games, bf4, en ghost from disc, and controller en wi fi adapter drivers, ill give it a shot. IM doin this cos my and Athlon is rubbish at bf4 i have to set priority to high everytime i play, hopefully this g1 sniper and i7 1150 setup will be better with gtx 770 sli, fingures crossed
