what resolution will you be playing at? what cpu will you be getting? more info would help greatly in a recommendation.
both those cards are powerful but depending on the rest of your system could be wasted money.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500311 For $510 USD you can get a 780. Its the 2nd highest preforming 780 on the market. I have had way to many problems with 290/x's to recommend them. I don't know if I have bad luck or something but 6/23 290's I purchased were defective in some way. I build computers for friends and as a hobby, and I have never have that many bad parts arrive. They were also all different kinds of 290's I bought, just DOA or defective. some are hotter then others (like a replacement for a space heater hot. )

780s preform well and cool, I would recommend that over any 290/290x

@ peter234: Please provide full system specs, include the case and powersupply details, right now we're all shooting in the dark. Also tell us your budget!
For most the R9 290X is just too expensive, most opt for the SLIGHTLY slower, but less expensive R9 290.
Generally the GTX780 runs cooler and quieter than the R9 290 and is usually more compact, so it's more likely to fit the system case.
either a R9 280X or GTX770 will play every game out there at Ultra or very high settings very smoothly on a single 1080 display...Assuming the rest of the system can keep up.
