I was putting together my first build today while a friend helped me, and when everything was installed and turned on. BIOS loaded fine, but then my monitor suddenly lost signal. We tried it again with a different connection setting, and it cut out sooner than before. We tried again with a different setting, and it refused to give any signal.

We tried different GPU slots, checked all the connections, reseated everything, tried a different monitor. Unfortunately we didn't have a different graphics card to test.

Could their be something wrong with the PCIe slots, or the graphics card? My mobo is PCIe 2.0, and my GPU is PCIe 3.0, but I thought they were backwards compatible. Thoughts?

My Build:
ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0
AMD FX-6300
Corsair Vengeance 8GB RAM
EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti Superclock
Corsair CX600 PSU
WD 1TB Blue HDD
Asus 23.6in VS247H-P LED Monitor

The PCI Express x 16 versions are backwards compatible. A graphics card with PCIe 3.0 would just run a little slower in a PCIe 2.0 slot.

The graphics card could be defective. It could also be a problem with the PSU (or connections). The card itself may not be secure in the slot. The motherboard slot could be defective (try another slot). It could also be a driver issue. You have already checked some of these. The checklists cover the most common issues.

Do you have a case speaker to check the beep codes?

Unfortunately I do not have a case speaker to check the beep codes. My friend had said if it had one, he would be able to tell me exactly what was wrong.

After a closer inspection, I noticed that I didn't put the brass standoffs on before securing the motherboard to the case, so tomorrow I'm going to disconnect everything, take it out, put in the standoffs, double check that everything is secured properly and try that.

My friend also took the graphics card to test in his rig, and I'm just waiting to hear back from him about that.

I'll come back with an update once I reconnect everything.

So I put the brass standoffs on, reconnected everything, reseated everything, reset the CMOS and there is still no signal to my monitor. I tried two separate graphics cards and now a red CPU led light is on when I turn the power on. All the fans turn on yet there's still nothing.

Could the motherboard be bad?

Yes, the motherboard is a possibility. A case speaker will help you troubleshoot this problem.
