I am not sure how antennas work on wireless routers. But I have a Linksys WRT54G and wish to know how do I research which antennas can work for extended range. I know their are some you can bought specifically for that router, but on eBay their are a lot of long range wireless antennas which I am not sure how to tell if they can connect to my router or not. So any help on the issue would be a closer step for me :)

thanks

That model as been around for a very long time and not all have removable antenna. If they can be removed it is very likely the connector it users is RP_TNC. Pretty much any antenna that is meant to be used on wireless routers and has that type of connector will work.

There are other connector type and you can get converters to go from one type to another. Just be careful when you are looking at antenna with other connector types to be sure they are meant to be used with WiFI equipment and not some other type of radio signal.

Is the router I have able to have the antennas removed/switched? and when researching for antennas, is their a special key word or something to know if it is used for wifi vs radio? (if it says radio that would be easy but not all do)

I can't say it is the same exact model number just different revisions that you can only really tell by taking it apart. All you can do is try to take the antenna off. The ones that are removable are extremely simple to take off.

It depends what you are looking for in antenna. If they say RP-TNC they are wireless antenna. If you are looking for some huge directional antenna you just need to verify that it will work in the 2.4g range. They are normally clearly marked if they are for wireless.
