These images show whats happening with my CPU.

As you can see I have an issue where my CPU's clock speed is periodically decreasing (from around 3300ghz to 1400ghz) and then going back up. This coincides with the the Core temps skyrocketing from their normal levels (around 44-50 degrees to 255 degrees according to the monitor) and then settling back down again. There is also a smaller increase in CPU temp but well within the normal ranges.

Clearly there is something not right here because if the core temp was genuinely getting to 255 degrees then I wouldn't be typing this on the same computer.

The processor is a AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor sitting on an MSI MS-7641 motherboard.

Any thoughts on the cause for this?

1)What CPU cooler are you using? Stock fan, water cooler or custom fan all dissapate heat at different rates, some faster than others.
2)Has thermal paste been applied? Less than a "pea-size" of thermal paste should be applied to the CPU.

Best Regards.

Stock fan for the cooling and I don't know about the thermal paste.

However regardless the cores can't possibly be getting to a temp that is reading off the scale of the monitor (which is 255 degrees Celsius). If they were then the computer would have melted by now.

This may be a software bug with the software you are using so....

I can only conclude that the reading was false and not a true representation of the temperature you have reached.

This can happen and does happen with CPU temp recording software.
