4gb to 8gb ram or 7200rpm hard drive to SSD

Hello there,
1. I play games like bf4 at high settings but recently I have started getting stuttering in it. The framerate will go from 70 to 0 and back up again in under a secound. I don't know what is causing it as I think my system is good enough to run it:
Amd fx 6300
4gb of ram
Asrock 960gm/u3s3
R9 270
7200rpm hard drive
So what could be causing this?
2. Shall I upgrade to 8gb of ram or a SSD?

I just opened a game after that last post on Rogue Transmission, about 40+ people, and I was at 2GB of RAM when I closed it just now. I could definitely see the game getting close to 4 GB after extended play, but yeah, other than that if it's a new issue and there's no other new variables (like...

An SSD won't effect your in game performance at all. RAM won't much either, but it has much more of an impact than an SSD (read: none), especially up to the first 8 GB. The only thing an SSD can potentially effect is loading screens (and even that depends on the game, whether the loading screen is being slowed by your network, or your system, etc.) I don't know if more RAM will fix your stuttering problem, I haven't encountered that at all, but my system is also entirely different than yours so I can't say.

I don't know about that because the game ran very very smooth up until about a mounth ago when it started stuttering. The stutters are not to often and they are manageable but they are quite annoying.

Look, SSD drives are faster than HDD so you can access faster your data.
If you look from the other side, 4gb of RAM are prety enough for your game.
I think you have problem with your GPU. If the GPU have places for it's own ram, upgrade GPU's RAM. If there aren't ane places for GPU RAM, buy a new GPU (at least 2GB) (I prefer Nvidia GTX 550 [or above] at 4GB [4GB are too expensive, so you can also use 2GB]).

Thanks for your reply. If bf4 was working well with no stuttering and above 60fps with 4gb ram (this is how it was running before) how would the ram help? Also how would it help outside of gaming.

BF4 can be pretty taxing even on 2GB cards, but you're already running a 2GB card which should be enough. I don't remember how much RAM BF4 ends up eating up over extended play, but 8GB is a very solid number (and imo the least I'd shoot for these days in a gaming PC) and may solve your problem, but again, hard to say.

The gpu is 2gb.
I was thinking about choosing the SSD as the game ran fine on 4gb before though it is at 70% and above in task manager. So I don't think it is the ram. It seems that the SSD will benefit more than the ram in most places like program opening etc.

Outside of gaming more RAM allows you to do more at once, basically. If you ever do anything like video rendering (or really any kind of rendering) more RAM will always be useful. I'll have to run BF4 myself to see how much of my RAM it ends up eating up. I don't see it being 8GB, or even 4GB without extended play. All that said, if it just started a month ago maybe a recent patch caused the issue? Or the release of one of the expansions? Not sure if their minimum requirements went up with the expansion (though I doubt it).

I thought it was navel strike (a new expansion) at first but i tried some of the vanilla maps and there was stuttering.
It could be a recent patch but I heard about it happening back in December. I haven't changed any settings since I first played it so I don't know what it may be. It could be that it has started using more ram as there is more weapons on the map at one time, even on the vanilla maps due to the new expansions.

The RAM upgrade won't hurt, but I can't promise it will fix your issue. :(

Okay Thanks for your help.
One thing though. You said that there would be more ram used over extended sessions. The stuttering starts and the ram usage goes to 70% as soon as i start playing.

Hm, yeah I'm not sure. It might be your GPU trying to use up some of your system's RAM, but if your RAM is jumping to that kind of usage I could definitely see the RAM being the problem. Like I said, my system is completely different and I've never played BF4 on anything other than this (Unless you count an Xbox 360 for a few weeks), so I'm not 100% sure. Hope the RAM solves it though. At least that's relatively easy. :x
