Hi guys im planning on buying the R9 290 tri-x oc from sapphire tomorrow and im wondering if anyone who owns it here has had problems with it such as defects and subject to rma or exchanging? Let me know what you think of the card as well. Thanks

Solution

Oh, well at those prices, the R9 290 Tri-X hands down, pummels the 770. its about 21% faster than any 770 so...

I owned a sapphire Tri-X R9-290 OC version and trust me,its definitely worth the money!!! :D so far i havent faced any defects yet and GPU are quite hard to face defect as the company would bankrupt when everybody claimning warranty or guarranty from them :p I love that card trust me :D it can even play BF4 at Utra settings at 60++ FPS !! :D but just make sure you had a good PSU to support that card ^^

I have the card, and its great. It has no defects and beats the 780 in lots of games. I particularly have issues with my 8350/290 tri-x config in BF4, as I only get 45-80fps or so in DX11, but I get 60-110 with Mantle enabled. I have this issue where lowering settings doesn't help my fps a lot though... I still get 50fps drops on low ;) did do you get similar fps drops Hawjin?

I definately recommend it though, don't let my troubles scare you, it running one out of the doezens I play ed wrong is not a red flag, the card is BEAST, coolest and fastest 290 out right now.

Cause the country im staying in currently is selling the r9 290 tri-x oc for around 500 usd.
The evga 780 is almost 800usd super overpriced.
My price range is 500 so ican either get the r9 290 trix or get a evga 770 4gb for around 600usd. What do you think. Im just scared cause i hear bad things about amd

Yeah, that's about right. Glad to hear I'm not the only one getting FPS drops :/ your rig is exactly the same as mine with your 8320 OC'd like that. I HATE my DX11 performance in BF4, do you get low DX11 performance too as well as FPS drops in BF3?

OP, you'll basically be able to max any optimized game, and run all unoptimized games (cough, BF3/BF4, cough) at least over 45.

Here, my average performance (no inflated BS, this is my FPS, mano y mano)
Metro Last Light max w/ 2x supersampling: 50-65fps
Bioshock Infinite Max with DOF on: 80-130fps
Far Cry 3 Max HBAO and 8xmsaa 45-52fps (I run high 4xmsaa at 57-70)
Sleeping dogs Extreme settings (not ingame benchmark, ingame gameplay) 45-75fps
Hitman Absolution Max 8xmsaa: 52fps benchmark, 49-80fps ingame.
Grid 2 Max 8xmsaa: 65-115fps

and of course...
Arma 2/Dayz mod maxed 30-70fps
BF4 Multiplayer Ultra with Mantle: 50-110fps, DX11: 42-90fps
BF3 multiplayer Ultra 40-112
Wish those ran better... BF is my favorite game

Tri-X 290 is very good card by itself but Sapphire has launched Vapor-X 290 recently and according to this review : http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/sapphire-r9-280x-vapor-x-oc-and-r9-290-vapor-x-oc-review/
It is one of the finest AMD card ever made ;)

You think the 8350 is that bad of a CPU that its bottling my 290? It should perform as well as a 3770k stock 0_o Is that really the iisue? I meet tons of people with FX processors getting no fps drops in BF3 or BF4 so...

Wow i think my FPS are similar to yours from what i observe.I plan to overclock my card soon and flash it to R9-290X :) that way i can get to 2816 Stream Processor and better performance ^^ and AMD FX-8350 is never a bad CPU,in fact the technology level of AMD is able to compete with Intel core just what AMD core lost is without the backing from Microsoft unlike Intel that Microsoft optimizes Intel core to every OS and thats the main reason why Intel core exceeds AMD core in performance.Besides, best stick with AMD products to AMD products.I bought AMD FX-8320 base on i using its GPU and i believe that AMD will develope products that supports its own product. :)

Its not really a bad CPU. Its just modern games are very intense especially in multiplayer.
Brings any CPU to its knees. Intel might perform a bit better but there will still be framerate drops

So I'm supposed to drop below 40fps when I look a certain direction in BF3/BF4? My GPU usage drops from 97-99%, to 30-50% when I look towards certain parts of the map... So its normal? can I do anything about it? OC the cpu doesn't help it.

No, I don't think its a GPU issue though... its he FX processor... the CPU clock holds its usage, but the GPU usage drops and the CPU spikes up... Is there anyone else getting these performance drops with FX/290 combo?

Do you think the Vapor-X is worth it over the Tri-X? Or is it a ploy to get more money?

Tri-X is clcoked at 1000mhz/1300mhz and stays under 75C. Vapor-X is clocked at 1030mhz/1330mhz and stays below 70C. I'd say, if you want to OC a ton, get the Vapor-X. My Tri-X runs quite well and cool up til 1100/1400, but If you want to go much higher, the Vapor-X's custom PCB will tkae you higher and its the best air GPU cooler money can buy for a 290.
