Is a PS4 really as good or almost as good as a high end gaming PC ($1,200-$2,000 USD)?

I know this isn't the 'appropriate' area for this question, but I'm hoping I can get some objective, unbiased answers here.

So, John Carmack and apparently many other people think a PS4 is as good a (I think he said) 3.68 teraflop PC, so I guess as good as a high end gaming PC?

Let's say you built a PC with 8GB of RAM, I5 4670k, and GTX 770 (2Gb), would the PS4 be just as or almost as capable overall due to optimization and programming etc as this quality PC? In 2-5 years, without upgrading the PC, would it be inferior to a PS4?

Thank you.

It`s fair to say the PS4 is a good console, what John Carmack said, though only currently applies to the PS4.

Consoles are what we call fixed hardware, Because of there nature to optimize a game for it takes very little because for example you only have to deal with the custom hardware used.

Where as in the PC world you have to when making a game consider for example the types of graphics hardware in use. So you have to cater for a wide range of things like graphics settings and detail settings to ensure it will run on alot of systems.

In after thought though consoles with fixed hardware, with in a year or two will lag behind what graphics cards can do on a pc.

It took about eight years from an xbox one and a PS3 to the current...

No. You can't play 3 games at once with a PS4.

Although a PS4 would be capable of running any game created and optimized for the PS4. Which isn't very hard considering they'd just drop the graphics and resolution.

The ps4 would probably become obsolete sooner before that high-end PC. But more consumers don't really want to spend up to that amount so that is where a game console may be the best option since a low-end gaming pc I assume would become less optimal after a short while.

No you wouldnt, you should probably know that ps4 use a set of settings with each game, for example:

PS4 run Assasins Creed 4 in 1080p at Normal settings with a stable 30fps. BUT!, PS4 can only run battlefield 4 in 900p in low settings at 60FPS.

PC can run Both these games at 1080p at ultra settings. with stable 60fps so my answer is : Consoles always use entry level hardware and configure the games to be able to run it. A Pc that had the same performance than the PS4 would be at 400-450 usd. So theres no gain and no lose.

Its basic, a Console is a PC with a brand thats all. Just like apple they sell you their brand not their hardware.

It took about eight years from an xbox one and a PS3 to the current hardware used in PC`s today. The Pc market moves a lot faster. In hardware refresh cycle.

So although what you see today from a PS4 and what a PC and a graphics card will differ given a two to five year gap.

Simply because on a PC in most cases you can get away with just plugging in a new GPU.

I see what you're saying, but won't a 4670k and GTX 770 or 780 become out of date/lag behind with the PS4/X1? Won't you still have to upgrade the PC to try and keep up? I guess I just need more justification to build a gaming PC. Ultimately, strategy games are my favorite, and PC is the only outlet that exists to satisfy my craving.

So assuming gaming is very important to an individual, and money isn't an issue, building a high end, costly gaming PC would be a good idea as opposed to going PS4? I keep wrestling with myself over which is best, I keep forgetting that the PS4 doesn't even have strategy games, and likely won't have many. I can only play Civilization on PC.

Are you serious?! The PS4 has to play at those low settings just to hit 900p or 1080p?!

If I was to spend, $1,200-$2,000 USD on my own PC build. I would blow the PS4 out of the water. Like others said: the consol is cheaper and is set to run by certain rulez...
and hey down the road I could alway upgrage any part of the PC I want, I would throw in water cooling....can't do that with PS4 and they do get hot after long game play.
