Can i use a vga to hdmi cable to setup my Aver media live gamer

I have a vga monitor and the aver media media live gamer requires hdmi, could i use a vga to hdmi wire to make it work?

I think it would be better to buy a HDMI splitter, connect the graphics card to both the monitor and the capture card and go about your business.

My monitor does not have a hdmi slot. It only has vga.
