Hi,
I’m new to the forum and usually find myself here after explaining my computer problems to master GOOGLE, so decided to join and pose a burning question! My B-day is coming up so I’m thinking of upgrading my ram and putting it on my gift list. I just need some clarification about various aspects of RAM, so here it goes:

My motherboard: ASUS RAMPAGE II GENE https://www.asus.com/ROG_ROG/RAMPAGE_II_GENE/specifications/
My Processor: Intel Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz http://ark.intel.com/products/37147/Intel-Core-i7-920-Processor-8M-Cache-2_66-GHz-4_80-GTs-Intel-QPI

My current ram:3x2GB (Copied from AIDA64 Extreme)
Module Name: OCZ XTC Platinum OCZ3P1600LV2G
Module Size: 2 GB (2 ranks, 8 banks)
Module Type: Unbuffered DIMM
Memory Type: DDR3 SDRAM
Memory Speed: DDR3-1066 (533 MHz)
Module Width: 64 bit
Module Voltage: 1.5 V
Error Detection Method: None
Refresh Rate: Normal (7.8 us)
Memory Timings:
@ 533 MHz 8-7-7-16 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 27-59-4-8-4-4-16
@ 533 MHz 7-7-7-16 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 27-59-4-8-4-4-16
@ 457 MHz 6-6-6-14 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 23-51-4-7-4-4-14
@ 380 MHz 5-5-5-12 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 19-42-3-6-3-3-12

OS: Windows 7 Pro SP1

1) What is the max amount of ram per slot? (What I found was total ram divided by # of slots (so 24GB/6 = 4GB/slot, right, if not could I slap 3x 8GB sticks?
2) Next, I don’t want to upgrade my ram again but not sure that maxing out at 24GB is necessary for moderate to heavy gaming. So is 12GB totally realistic for what’s needed in the future or should I go with more, like 18GB or 24BG? As well will this new ram be usable with a new rig in the future?
3) Next, should I just ADD more ram or REPLACE the current 3x2GB? (I know that I won’t find the same ram speed and timings and I’m not really comfortable tweaking the BIOS!)
4) What is the best configuration for performance between using only 3 slots and using all 6 slots, with the same total GB? i.e. 6x2GB or 3X4GB (keeping in mind I will NOT be upgrading/adding new ram in the future again).
5) As for the new ram itself I was thinking of using the brand Corsair Vengeance or XMS3. Which type should I go with (does my CPU restrict the type of ram?)DDR3-2000 or DDR3-1600 (is there really that much of a noticeable speed difference?) Basically what do you guys recommend: Kingston, G.Skill , Crucial, Corsair etc. and what series i.e. PRO, Vengeance, Platinum, Hyper etc.

I hope you guys have fun with this one! I’m not the tech-savvy type so this will definitely help me a lot. As for price, not too sure, I’m guessing max budget of 200-300$. As well, what about my CPU… is it worth replacing it with a “newer” faster one or it’s better to change the whole rig at that point?

Thanks for all your help!!

4GB per slot, 12GB is fine for gaming and should carry you as long as you run the rig, unless you get into heavire duty things like video rendering, heavy imaging, that type of thing --- I'd replace the DRAM , mixing sets can be problematic, especially with tri and quad channel rigs, best config will be 3x4GB, it's less stress on the MC (memory controller) than running 6 sticks, for DRAM itelf, would look at the GSkill Snipers in 3x4GB

The 920 is a strong CPU, if you haven't already, look at OCing it
