780 will use less power, run cooler, and fans will be quieter while gaming. Yet is more comparable to the 290. the 290x will edge out the 780, but run warmer, fans will be louder, and will use more power.

I love NVidia but I for cuda and physixs. If I were to buy it'd be the 780. That said, both are great, but the better card for pure gaming is the 290x hands down. I'd sacrifice a little performance to stay NVidia, but that's just my opinion.

i second the 780.... b/c if you ever get to the point where you add a second card, NVIDIA SLI is MUCHCHHHHHH better than crossfire.
at least at the moment, but it's been that way the past few years as far as driver reliabliity and scalability are concerned.... coming from someone who had constant issues with 7950 crossfire then switched to 770 4gb SLI and is one happy MF'n camper now!

780s are possibly redundant when the 8 series comes out and the 780 ti drops in $. whereas the 290x is a newer card and less like to be replaced as a good value high end card soon? could be wrong..

also with the popularity of consoles (running on amd ati graphics i believe) would the 290x architecture not better suit games in future ( ie be more future proof)? has it therefore got more potential?

absolutely not, the GK110 from nvidia is a better GPU than the hawaii board wich is already pushed to the limit...the GTX 780 and 780ti are superior cards in every way possible...
And the 800 series will not come out before 2015...the 780 is the best choice here if it fit in the budget.

thanks for the reply. However I have read that the gk10 uses keplar which is being replaced by maxwell.. the hawaii chip is new so they have more scope to optimise its use over time, allowing it to become more efficient and, consequently, future proof.. not much in it between these chips there's only £20 in it with the 290x being more £380 vs £360. also the 290x model i am looking at has better reviews in general on various website except gpuboss which favours 780
