I have a amd 8350 with an hyper tx3 cooler, sapphire geforce gtx 770 reference, 8gb ram, msi motherboard, bluray drive and a 850watt corsair PSU. MSI 760GM p23 motherboard and a themaltake case.

I just recently replace a sapphire 280x toxic for poor performance and got a the nvidia geforce gtx 770 from best buy http://www.bestbuy.com/site/nvidia-geforce-gtx-770-2gb-gddr5-pci-express-3-0-graphics-card/1826004.p?id=1219065626957&skuId=1826004

I only had it one day but i want more power to "future proof" myself for awhile. (i dont game too much but when i do i want good performance every time with no compromises on 1080p i play alot of crysis 3 and darksiders 2 now but soon bf4 and others)

so i saw a EVGA geforce gtx780 SC in best buy http://www.bestbuy.com/site/nvidia-geforce-gtx-780-superclocked-3gb-gddr5-pci-express-3-0-graphics-card/5129003.p?id=1219111160643&skuId=5129003&st=gtx%20780&cp=1&lp=1

but i dont think my case has good air flow becasue when i had the 280x the case got really hot (one top exuast fan and1 front intake) Thats why im skeptical on another open air design gpu and Im liking this "blower style fan i have now thats keeping my case good and cool inside even with the front intake fan disabled for now. thats why Im looking at this

Which card do you guys think is the best for me, which is better over all. Also i just love the refrence model design especially with the led lit geforce gtx.

Just to add I have had bad luck ordering online with electronics thats why I have been going to best buy. Because if something is wrong i can just drive 5 minutes to the store and return. But if newegg has anything i may jump on it.

Solution
This is a good opportunity to learn from my experience. Like you, I have a case with low/moderate airflow so I thought a reference card blowing hot air outside the case would be best. Mainly, I figured the hot air blowing around inside the case would be a bad thing and heat up the other components. What I didn't figure is that, while the reference cooler would keep the case components cooler, it still wouldn't be enough to keep itself cool. So in a case with poor airflow, my reference cooled GTX 780 Ti is itself running warmer for that very reason, poor case ventilation. The result is that my card rarely sustains any sort of turbo boost and is constantly running at or slightly above its temperature limit (82c). So, my recommendation is to go for the ACX cooler to give your GPU a fighting chance within a hot enclosure. Let your case exhaust fan do its job and let your GPU at least have a shot at running at good turbo boost speeds, which it should do, even in a hotter enclosure.

By the way, nothing wrong with purchasing from Best Buy. Just be sure to take advantage of their price match guarantee. Scour their accepted price match sites (Newegg, Amazon, TigerDirect, Rakuten, etc.) for the best deal and get them to price match your purchase.

So you guys really think that the custom cooler on the best buy model would be better even with the hot in being dumped in my case with poor air circulation? I just seem a little scared because with the 770 i have now all is well and everything seems pretty cool compared to when i had the 280x toxic edition

So much people talk trash about Best buy that I was a little shy to say I shop their especially me being a computer geek. But I just find it easier to shop their sometimes instead of online because i can just return easily. not so easy with online stores.

How well does your 770 do at sustaining turbo boost clocks? What temp does your CPU hit when gaming?

Right now, I'm running through Bioshock Infinite and that pushes my card at 98% usage the entire time. It heats up to 83c and backs off its turbo boosts down to its stock speed and pretty much stays there for the duration. Sure my FPS is ~120, but it would be better to know that my card could boost a little higher with better cooling. My CPU does run about 49c during gaming, which is pretty good though.

So the angle is the GPU temp vs the CPU temp, more or less.

I have been playing Crysis 3 at mostly very high settings accept for AA (that on meduim) and I play multiplayer online. I seem to have about 90 percent utilization but my temps havent been above about 75 degrees Celsius. I use core temp and on my 8350 I get funky number sometimes. It says 255c (which i know is wrong) so i just check from my mother board and i dont go over 48 degrees Celsius
Do you think i should keep my gpu cool or my cpu cool? I would think the cpu needs to stay cool since it is essentially the brain right?

I accidentally hit the wrong button and choose your last answer as the best. my apologies

So does your 770 have a reference cooler or an aftermarket cooler?

The way I see it, your current setup is going to be a perfect measure of how your new card is going to behave. The temp/performance ratio will be about the same. There's nothing wrong with the reference cooler, it just won't perform as highly with sustained turbo boost clocks. A nice cool case interior is a good thing after all.

You can use Afterburner to keep an eye on your GPU and CPU temps at the same time.

Yes i have the nvidia geforce gtx 770 reference model from best buy. okay what i will do is download afterburner and see what type of temps i get then. but really all i want is a stable rig where i can do my work, school, video editing and gaming whenever i need. So far since i had this build i have been having trouble getting it right (2weeks now) but if you think the aftermarket cooler is better i may go with it since you have had the same experience as me.

and again again i hit the best answer button! my apologies ( when i see green my brain is thinking that is the reply.

OKay i just finish doing the test and you are right. I was playing multiplayer and after finished i was at 99% utilization and 81 degrees celsius. hmm now i dont what to do. I dont want my cpu getting any hotter but i dont want my gpu not running at optimal levels.

So were you running at a good turbo boost clock, or were you running at stock clocks when gaming at the target temp of 80-81c?

How fast were your fans spinning?

Both of these answers will help to tell you just how much case ventilation you have and whether your card is being cooled properly.
