New build won't POST

Hello, I've just built as new machine and it won't boot at all. I have followed the troubleshooting steps found at http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems and this is what I've found:

When I plug each peripheral in to the psu and do a psu self test, everything works (fans, drives, h100i cooler lights up). When I plug the CPU and the motherboard in, the psu just clicks and nothing starts. I've tried with 1 stick of ram, and tried other ram from another build but same issue. All this is without the graphics card plugged in to the psu (I haven't got that far yet) although it IS in the PCIe slot.

Specs are:

Asus Maximus Extreme VI
I7 4770k
H100i CPU cooler
EVGA GTX 780i
Corsair AX860i PSU
32GB corsair vengeance ddr3 2400mhz RAM (4x8gb)
HAFX Case

I'm not sure what else to try! Can anyone help?

Yes I have. I've built lots before, but never had this issue.

Further tests and this issue is ONLY brought about when the 24pin EATX power is plugged into he mb.

Since you said you have done a few builds before.
Just to check I would bread board the system.

The little click or tick, you hear, is a sign of a short circuit.
Or should I say that the psu is detecting a short circuit when it comes to connecting the 24 pin atx block.

So it would mean, have a double check that a standoff on the back plate is lined up, or positioned in the right place for the screws.
There may be an extra one touching the back of the mobo where no hole exists for mounting causing the short, and it is in contact with the back of the board or a component causing a short.

I mean if it was mounted in the wrong place you would not see it or give it a second thought.

All the same double check.
By bread boarding if the system works it confirms that a short can be happening related to the standoff positions or extra one in the wrong place.

Did you try removing the card and just running off the iGPU for now? Without power applied to the dGPU, it might be confusing the system during post. Could it be that the BIOS is configured to default to the PCIe slot, it finds a card there which can't run properly because it doesn't have the power connections to it and says 'screw it, I'm done'.

I would remove everything that's not necessary to get it to run, take it down to no hard drive, no DVD/CD, no dGPU. Just memory, cpu, heatsink and see if you can get to a POST.

Yes tried breadboarding but same issue. Is the motherboard broken?

Yes tried removing everything, same issue.
