New PC - Awful internet

Finished building my PC about two weeks ago now but haven't had much chance to use use it as I have been away. The first thing I noticed is that the internet seems to be appalling.

So on our home network there is a desktop connected to the router by LAN, my new desktop in the room above connected via wireless and my iPad. I have tried speed tests on all three devices. The desktop connected via LAN gets 11MB/s download, my iPad gets about the same when it is in the room above (next to my new PC), but my computer barely even loads the page and when it does the speed is around 20KB/s!!

I don't think it's a hardware issue as it's all new and works fine. The wireless adapter that I'm using is an Edimax EW-7811Un and it is connected in the back of my computer. It works fine as I have used it on other computers on the network with good speeds. Also, the wireless connection is usually about 4/5 bars so don't think it is that.

I am really lost with what to do, but I can barely do anything with a few KB/s download speed!!
Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

I like what bill0001g is saying.

I had a very similar problem on my home theater PC where it couldn't even stream standard def netflix without cutting out and dropping all the time, but the USB dongle was in behind the PC where all the cables from my home theater are running. I grabbed a 3' USB extension cable and ran the dongle and taped it on the side of the home theater stand and now it's rock solid HD all the time.

Do you have front USB ports on the case that you could try, or maybe a USB hub that you could borrow from someone to move it around and see if that fixes the issue?

It might sound stupid to you but anyways.

Are you using Windows 7/8 ?
If yes check if the wireless network is set as a homenetwork.
If that is the case as well check the windows firewall

::Recommendation - Turn it off, Windows firewall is useless anyways and will bother you more as otherwise::

The check again what the speed is you'll get.

Should the network not be set to Homenetwork then please do so and follow the above and try again :)

It could be a driver issue make sure you have the proper ones...generally not the ones from microsoft use the ones from the manufacture.

Those tiny USB cards tend to have the worst performance of any of the cards. They have very small antenna and when you put them in a desktop computer you are putting them very close to lots of metal. A $3 usb extension cable would allow you to test to see if there is some kind of issue with the computer itself causing interference.

I'm using windows 8.1. It is set as a home network and I have tried with firewall disabled but with no change.

I have checked the drivers and I have the latest from the manufacturer installed.

I have used the Wifi adapter on both the front and back. When it is on the back the signal is even worse and when it is on the front it is marginally better, However, as I said before, the adapter has been used on another desktop (made from more metal) and worked fine.

Thanks for your help. I will try getting an extension cable and see if that helps. Also, I may try moving the router to upstairs, connecting my PC with LAN and the one downstairs with the adapter, see if anything changes.

Thanks again :)

After a bit of moving cables around and changing router position, I now have my PC connected via LAN and the PC downstairs on WiFi. Both work fine now with 13MB/s download speed. The adapter just seemed to prefer the other PC to mine!

Thanks to everyone!
