I'm very excited to be upgrading my system for the first time with a new PSU, CPU Cooler, and GPU. I'm very worried that I may not take a proper precaution and somehow kill my system. My biggest concern is grounding myself while working on the computer, which I'd like some tips on. Aside from grounding myself are there any other precautions I should take prior to upgrading it?

Ground yourself, and make sure that all the parts are compatible with each other, and that they are all top notch components.

Not any other precautions really. Watch a few youtube videos on installing a CPU cooler... Depending on what you have, the MB may have to come out so you can get to the back of it. Apply the thermal paste with a piece of folded paper or something with a straight edge for a consistent application. Everything is pretty straight forward. Again, plenty of how-to videos available...

I know how to ground myself but I want to know if my method is going to be good. The computer will be worked on on a wooden dining table. I'll be standing on top of two cardboard cake circle that are on top of my carpet.
As far as I've seen, I just have to touch a piece of metal (the case cover) and that's all I need to do? I just touch it occasionally?
