I am trying to validate a copy of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Home Edition.

There was a virus on the computer and it had to be taken to a tech to be fixed. In order to get rid of all traces of the virus, they had to do erase everything and re install Windows 7. I guess the trial period has expired because there is now a message that says the copy of windows is not genuine. I have the original product code for the original Windows 7 from the computer sticker. I tried using that code to validate windows but it did not work. I believe it's because it's the product key is for the original version of Windows 7 and not the Service Pack 1 edition. Is there anything I can do to validate Windows 7 with the old product key?

Hi

call Microsoft support on the number given for activation and get thru to a support person

If you have Windows 7 Home SP1 OEM System Builder edition and your previous version key is for Windows 7 Home OEM System Builder edition they can get round the problem for you .

If they detect different versions and you want to activate Pro or ultimate they will not allow it

things get more complicated if you originally had Dell, Toshiba, HP or any other BIG computer company OEM versions.

The tech support people should have sorted this out for you and asked you for the recovery or Windows 7 DVD's
before doing the re installation

Let us know how you get on
