HDMI to VGA converter

I'm trying to connect my laptop to the court's multimedia cabinet via their VGA cable in order to connect to their projector. I'm using an HDMI to VGA converter because my laptop didn't come with a VGA port and my problem is this: as soon as I plug the VGA cable into the converter, my computer display starts wigging out and cutting off & on to the point where I'm unable to open and change any of the settings... what do I need to do to fix this problem?

well, if it is, say, moving too far to the right, unplug it, move the screen to the left, and when you plug it back in it should be close to the center.

or your monitor may have an auto-adjust you can try.

I use vga-hdmi converters at work (I know you are going the opposite way) and they have a menu on them where you can adjust settings like resolution and update rate, see if that works.

Otherwise I would test the adapter with other VGA displays to see if the adapter is just garbage.
