How does Amd's Turbo core System Work?

I have an Fx 8320. I've downloaded amd overdrive and it has the option to change the turbo core settings. I've increased the turbo core settings from 3.7ghz to 4 ghz and it is set to 4 cores. However, when I start playing games, it shows that all cores are raised to the 4ghz I set it at, not just 4. Is it supposed to do this? Also, why are there 2 boost levels options in amd overdrive. It seems that only changing boost level 1 will affect the turbo speeds.

Do not use AMD overdrive, go in your bios and disable all the power saving feature AND disable turbo boost...set the multiplier manually to 20 and test for stability, it should be good at 4.0 ghz with stock vcore...

If you have an aftermarket cooler (hyper 212 for example) go back in bios and set multiplier to 22, manually set Vcore to 1.435v and you now have a 4.4ghz CPU that will crush anything you throw at it...good luck, feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions i've been playing with my chip for over a month now i know the thing like if i created it...
maximum stable clockspeed on mine is 4.75ghz at 1.5v on the core...need a good aftermarket cooler for that speed and a well ventilated case...this is why i run at 4.4ghz...

whatever you do don't go turbo core. I found out the hard way of how it works. After months of troubleshooting my fps drops in all games i came to the conclusion that it was turbo core. What turbo core does it gives it more power when it needs it, so in some situations in game you'll get these massive fps drops because of turbo core thinking you don't need alot of power, so it underclocks it self.

Buddy, my FX8320 runs at 1.33-1.35 @ 4.4Ghz stable. Why did you choose such a high vcore?

i don't know man i test my CPU stability with prime 95 and the stock voltage for the FX-8320 is 1.38v i went ahead and set multiplier to 22 like you did and tested for stability and i need 1.435v on the core to have a stable overclock a this speed...what else can i say? i have a hard time understanding how you can have voltage a full 0.05v under stock value and still have this 25.7% overclock stable...you must have a hell of a nice golden chip...you are lucky...what else can i say!

This is weird.

First of all, apparently the stock voltage for every 8320 chip is different? Some guy at default values had 1.45 stock voltage, you have 1.38 and mine is 1.35 stock.

Second, like you, I really doubt I am getting 4.4 Ghz UNDER stock voltage, but I have tested for multiplier throttling and it does not occur. Something is wrong, but I cannot piece it together.

as long as your performance are good, and temps ! :)
i have my FX under an hyper 212 and my temps while playing heavy games are about 47-48c and under prime torture gets to about 55c so i'm quite happy with those...i don't really care about power consumption we have hydro-electricity here in quebec and it's very cheap so those extra voltages cost me like maybe 20 or 30 cents at the end of the month...i ripped through a couple benchmarks and i score very good, my CPU can be stable as high as 4.75ghz with 1.5v for benchmarking and at that speed i score about the same as a stock core i7-3770 wich i think is phenomenal for a 120$ CPU...

Yeah, I always wonder why people are cranking their vcore up to the sky for such low-moderate overclocks. My FX8150 was able to go up to 4.1ghz on stock voltage. I believe I only boosted to 1.32 for 4.2ghz and 1.38 for 4.6ghz. I think it has to do with the quality board you are using and whether it has VRM or not...and the power phase specifications. I find that on higher end boards, VRM equipped, you don't need to boost the voltage as much for low-moderate overclocks, but obviously you have more headroom on a high end board for higher voltages and clean power. On lower end/ cheaper boards(your $30-$60.00 boards) you have to use more power(I don't know if this is, due, to inefficiency or what) and their mosfet become overwhelmed more easily and your temps and overall well being of your board becomes a factor in overclocking.

I have an ASUS M4A89 GTD Pro/USB 3 mainboard and I've been fiddling with CPU overclocking of the PHenom II x6 1090T I have installed on it and found that both AMD Overdrive and the ASUS vTune utility that comes with the board just cause more trouble than they are worth. I'm getting good results now since I uninstalled those apps and changed settings in the BIOS. I upped the cpu volts a little to about 1.4 and set the cpu multiplier to 18.5 and the Turbo Core multiplier to 20 in order to get 3.7 GHZ on all cores and an occasional 4.0 GHz when the Turbo Core kicks in. This gave me my highest 3DMark11 score. It seems that when I had the Turbo Core multiplier set to "AUTO" bad stuff happened which really hosed my 3DMark 11 result. You can either turn Turbo Core OFF altogether if it's causing trouble or set it to a safe multiplier. I left my FSB and HTT at normal speed (200 MHz & 2000 MHz respectively) since raising them affects Memory speed and other things I don't know enough about to mess with.

At 4.2Gh my computer would just give me a black screen when trying the recomended voltage (1.4v) and around that. But when I set it to 1.2v it finally starts up. Any idea what that means?

Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer.
CPU cooler: 212 evo.
I have also disabled all the stuff that he mentioned. power saver and turbo boost.

This saved me a ton of money, thank you, other people said it was my mobo..that it was too hot...that i need a better psu...better cooler...said 8350 bottlenecking my 970.. kept getting fps drops for no reason..read this then i disabled turbo....smooth as butter...Thank you so much..it was a stressful situation for weeks now
