Dell Optiplex 980 Motherboard Issue

We had an electrician at work who inadvertently kept cutting power to our Dell Optiplex 980. It turned on fine the next day, but after 30 minutes presented a burning smell (melting plastic) and shut down. The amber light error codes now suggest a system board failure. I have checked all peripherals and the PSU and they work fine. The only thing on the motherboard I can notice is a grey box with a copper coil in it that says TAF200 that looks like it has melted a bit of the black plastic on top. I'd like to try and just replace this part if possible, does anyone know what it is and if I can purchase an equivalent replacement through Digikey or such. I assume because of the copper coil that it is an inductor, but can't find confirmation anywhere. It is the larger of the two grey boxes on the motherboard. I can send pictures if needed.

Thanks,
Ryan

How about a new motherboard? Just buy a new motherboard, LGA 1156 socket, and drop everything in. You may need to do a new install of windows. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Asus-P7P55-M-Socket-1156-Micro-ATX-Motherboard-W-P55-Chipset-4-DDR3-slot-sata3-/231161881892?pt=Motherboards&hash=item35d2526524

If you don't want to do a reinstall or new install of windows, you can still get another identical motherboard from dell (expensive) or ebay (less expensive): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-980-SFF-Motherboard-C522T-/181368237999?pt=Motherboards&hash=item2a3a63afaf

That sounds like one of the filters on the motherboard probably stopped working correctly. One thing that you could do is check every component with a multimeter, but that may be hard. If your computer is no longer under warranty just take out the power supply and take the cover off of it and have a look. A lot of people say never to take the cover off the power supply but honestly as long as the capacitors have been drained you should be just fine.

That is fairly irreverent because most dell motherboards use a btx form factor, custom cooling that will only mount onto their motherboards, and the I/O plate is normally cut into the case. If you knew anything about dells you would understand this.

A dell chassis can be modified to fit other motherboards. But you're right, I don't spend too much time with them, as they are overpriced crap of computers.

I gave him an option, options are good.

OP will need Dell motherboard or whole new system, note the location of CPU with cooler, this is last of the Dell BTX kind.
