Are used cards safe to buy?

I bought a second hand r9 280x on ebay yesterday. It ships in quite some time, and right now I'm concerned that it might function correctly.

The seller said that the card was used a month for bitcoin mining. Does this damage the card? Does it make it less powerful than a brand new one?

Thanks for any answers.

It can damage the card if it was kept continuously hot from overclocking and crowding into a small case with others.

If not overclocked or overheated it should be fine. I've got two secondhand cards myself. In 6 months not a single problem. But they're Asus and nVidia - not used for bitmining.

I don't think you should have any trouble, a lot of bitcoin miners are selling their cards because it has become impossible to mine them. Check the sellers rating and customer reviews before you buy anything from Ebay.

Sorry I forgot to include that the seller did not overclock the card. To be more specific, he used it for LiteCoin mining.
