What are drivers exactly (I don't know what category this should be in so i put this here)

Solution
Drivers are used to make a specific device to work. For example, you do not have any sound in your PC, it's either it is not installed, corrupted or deleted. So you will need to look for the Sound Driver in the Manufacturer's Site (ex. If you are using a Sony Desktop/Laptop, look for the model in the Sony Site and download the driver). Same with Video Cards, Card Readers, Mouse, etc. Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 have Generic Drivers where you do not need to download the drivers but have limited features. To use the full features of the device, you must download the drivers for it.

drivers are what allows your operating system, eg. Windows, to "see and use" your hardware, eg CPU, graphics etc.
With almost all hardware you buy, the drivers will come with it on a disk, but usually the latest ones are on the manufacturers website.

Windows, particularly 7 and onwards, has many built in compatibility drivers, so even if you haven't installed anything specific for your graphics etc, it will still work to a limited extent. This then allows you to install the proper drivers from within windows.
