Hello everyone,

I guess it's a good thing that this problem happened at the same time on two completely different computers. The two computers that I have are:

Acer Revo RL80-UR22 Desktop (Black) This I use mainly for FTP stuff, web design, and HTPC. So it needs a constant connection. Ethernet is not an option right now. As it's my roommates set up.
Dell Latitude E5400 This is my work laptop

I also have the Dell Inspiron 117RN which hasn't had any issues. This computer is stuck on Windows 8. While the other two are Windows 8.1. So that leads me to believe that my wifi issues are an 8.1 issue.

For the past couple of weeks I have had wifi issues with my Dell Latitude since upgrading. Sometimes it would have no connection and it would drop out. This wouldn't be a problem if... then I could just reset my wifi. However, when I go to the Wifi signal and click on it to repair. Nothing pops up! Not even the nifty Windows 8 wifi metro menu. I feel like the computer doesn't even register the click, and this has nothing to do with my mouse. So the only fix so far for this computer is to shut it down and hope and pray it reconnects which sometimes it doesn't. Outlook 365 also has a huge issue/delay in reconnecting as well.

My other Windows 8.1 computer, the Acer. Just won't connect at all anymore. It is running a Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 wifi adapter and I did upgrade this driver. Since upgrading to latest and supposedly proper driver. It no longer connects to the internet. That is ridiculous!!! The latest drivers should work with Windows 8.1. Even before the upgrade though, I was having connection issues, which is why I thought the upgrade would solve my problem.

It is unfortunate because I am a huge advocate for Windows and Microsoft. I do NOT plan to switch to any other operating system. This includes Linux you Fanboys. I work in the technology industry and really enjoy Windows 8's IT functions as well as their App Ecosystem, which I think is the most robust out of all the three main mobile ecosystems (Apple, Android, Windows), and will only improve with time and as Windows becomes one.

Before they work towards the future maybe they should take a step back and make sure all drivers and hardware are supported like each of the driver manufacturer's websites say they are. The newer Dell models seem to have it down but older Dell's and Acer's apparently are having trouble.

PS: It's not a router issue. I can even use my Windows Phone and connect just fine. Both at work and at home.

What security are you using on your router? I just found this out... Windows 8.1 does not support WPA. It supports WEP and WPA2. From what I have read this was Microsoft's decision because most devices support WPA2 now so WPA is redundant. Following that logic, why the heck did they leave WEP as an option???

I am frustrated because I just setup some new laptops for a client and none of them connect to his wireless router as it is older and doesn't support WPA. He now is facing the added expense of adding a new router to his network, which worked fine up to now. Maybe he can send Microsoft my bill?

Woah. I think you are onto something there! This could explain constant internet droppings (hehe) on Windows 8.1! Have you researched more into the problem? How could we fix it?

Sorry, in the second paragraph I meant to say his older router doesn't support WPA2, only WPA.

Right now I am trying to use another wireless utility to see if I can get it to allow the WPA setting. So far Intel Pro Set Wireless Utility has not worked, but then I have Qualcomm hardware. Also thinking about resetting the laptops back to Windows 8 to see if WPA is an option there.

I believe it is. I have a laptop at home with Windows 8 that I only use for testing software and I have had no issues connecting to wifi to it. However, I did notice that my wifi is currently set to AES not WPA so it's not an issue for my work laptop which is running 8.1.
