Hello everyone,

My Sony Vaio E series VPCEB16FG shuts down after a few seconds. First i thought it was a overheating problem and I was right. I removed the back cover and removed all the dust near the fan and the overheating problem was gone. But now, the laptop shuts down after a few seconds for no reason. I've tried removing the battery and pressing the f10 key and plugging it in again but same problem. I'm facing this problem since two days please any help would be appreciated :D

As a rule it is important at this stage to tell us what it does. For example, I turn on a cold system and I hear the fan run and the CD turn. X lights flash in this order and I hear a series of beeps and three last thing that I see on the screen is . ..you get the picture

I would suspect you have either a bad/poorly seated ram card or a bad/poorly seated hard drive, a bad/poorly seated dvd player. Try disconnecting them one at a time and see if there is a change in behavior. It could also be the motherboard itself of the processor but try the easy ones first.

If the laptop is shutting down that quickly, one of the vital components has malfunctioned; the processor, motherboard, and RAM are the most likely suspects. The hard drive is an unlikely cause as the BIOS will state that an OS can't be found, rather than powering off automatically.

Unfortunately, being a laptop, the only vital component you can realistically test is the RAM. If your laptop has two DIMM sticks, you can remove one and see if the problem reoccurs. If it does, replace that stick, remove the other one and try again. If you still have the same problem, then you need to get the laptop repaired or RMA'd.

Look at the situation as a whole; the laptop had an overheating problem, which you solved, but now it shuts down before getting close to booting the OS. Logically, the overheating problem has caused another component to fail. If the fan you cleaned was that of the CPU, then chances are that's the component which has failed.

My windows xp laptop switches off immediately the window logo flashes on screen, and it keeps rebooting/crashing for hours - no response from moving arrows to safe mode, etc.

Power was accidentally shut off and windows did not do a proper. closedown.

This laptop has operated like an obedient servant or robot for 8 years, with never a hint anything was wrong (or likely to go wrong).

I have a VPCEA16FG, and well i had the exact same issue!
The sudden shutdown would happen while I was playing a game or doing too many things at once ( Running 20 Tabs in chrome + 2-3 PSDs open in Photoshop), at first I thought it was a ram fault, but yesterday, All I was doing was watching a movie and then suddenly it goes off. I noticed some dust on the vents so I took Colin spray and sprayed the vent area, after a bit of frothing it was cleaned but now the matter became worse.

I booted my laptop and went to the BIOS Screen, and boom! Again shut-down, more than 10 secs in the BIOS screen and the thing was shutting down! wtf to do! Now I have windows 7 and Ubuntu on the laptop, so i booted into Ubuntu and checked the temperatures! Max temp the core touched was 103 degrees celsius lol. There we go that was the problem!!!

The next day I went to the hardware store and got new heatsink compound. Now this is my first compound change in 5 years! lol the thing was hard as a rock, so I used some tequila and a screw driver to clear off the top of the processor area for the new paste to sit there. Make sure you take the old compound off totally before putting the new one. After putting the new paste, started the laptop and everything is back to normal now.
Maximum load temperatures are around 90 degrees and idle is around 45-50 degrees C.

So if you're still facing that problem! Refresh your Heatsink Compound and clean those vents! and make sure you do that clean up once every 12 months at least.

The CPU runs at maximum clock when its in the bios mode (thanks to the old bios) that's why it goes off after 10 seconds, in Ubuntu once the OS is loaded the clocks go down so that's how it remains in a lower temperature area.

Cheers!

i have VGN-CS11S first problem noisy fan so i bought a new one and it runs smoothly. Then after 4 months it was also shutting down after starting up. So I change the heatsink compound again but shuts down also. It is also hot even if it only runs till startup. Any suggestions? Should i buy a new heatsink? Thanks.
