Is the pro version of Windows 8 worth the extra $30 (give or take) to get? I've read the reviews of each and recognize you get more stuff on the Pro version but am just not sure if the extra money is worth it - please try to give more information than a yes or no - I want to be informed!

You almost certainly do not need 8 Pro or 8.1 Pro.

Join a domain
If you don't need any of those functions, Pro is simply wasted money.

Do you encrypt files? if you do then it comes with bitlocker
Do you need to connect to a domain?
Do you need to access the computer remotely?
If you answer yes to "Do you need to connect to a domain" then the answer is yes.
IF you answered yes to the other 2 but do not need to connect to the domain, then the answer is mybe. You can get programs to help with remote access and to encrypt files. But IMO I'd just get pro anyway.
If you answer NO to all 3 then your fine with just standard.
