i7-4820k good for gaming?

I am looking to upgrade to a new motherboard and processor. I am wondering if the i7-4820k would be a good processor. I would like to go to the x79 chipset and I would be using my computer for gaming and few other things. So would that processor be good for gaming? Also what would be a good motherboard to go with? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

An LGA 2011 setup is good for rendering and programming along with gaming. If primarily using the build for gaming, go with an i5-4670k or i7-4770k and a z87 board.

yes, it will be great for gaming, but unless you want to 3-way or 4-way sli/crossfirex, or have some other reason not to go with socket 1150, then an i7 4770k would be my choice. +1^

If you will be doing at least 3-way SLI / crossfire, then you should go with a 4930k (6-core) since a 4820k may bottleneck 3+ GPUs.

So that is why I am apprehensive about it. Also I only have a 850 watt power supply. Also is there a motherboard that you would recommend for a 2011 socket?

Well if you are limiting your self to 850 watts, I don't see how you can consider 3rd and 4th GFX card .... which is the primary reason to go LGA 2011 for a gaming rig.

2011 CPUs perform nearly equivalent to 1150 CPUs in games. A good-quality X79 motherboard with 4-way SLI / crossfire support would be good. If you are going all-out with more than two GPUs, then get at least a 1000w PSU.

well, you can do all of those things on 1150, and 2011 is a bit more expensive. I would personally get i7 4770k and a mobo that has the features you need, and if you dont need 3-way or 4-way sli/crossfirex, or extreme overclocking, I would recommend the Maximus VI Hero.

you can sli 2 780 Ti's or 2 290X's and 850 watt is fine if it is high quality.

Don't need overclocking either. For gaming, GPU matters more. Without knowing what the rest of your system is, it really is difficult to suggest an upgrade.

I wouldnt suggest you buy a 4 core LGA 2011 CPUs as they perform lower than a Core i7 4770k. However If u want a LGA 2011 CPU that has a better performance than LGA 1150 CPU get a 6 core processor like a I7 4930k, but it also comes with a much greater price. and as for the motherboard get a Sabertooth X79 cuz its amazing for Gaming and overclocking.

Like he said. Overclock your CPU if you need more performance.

If you have a Z87 board, get a decent heatsink, if you don't already have one, and overclock what you have. Your CPU is still in the top tiers of performance.
