Hello,

I have never tried reaching out to a forum/community before for this kind of question, but I want to avoid any issues with compatibility or future headaches.

My brother currently has a stock HP Compaq Pavilion P6-2316s. He wants to improve it's performance on a limited budget. My first suggestion is to add in another 4gb of PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600) to reach the max of 8gb - shouldn't be more than $50.

He currently plays games off of the integrated video and I definitely think getting a video card would be a huge improvement. Any suggestions on what card is compatible that would significantly boost performance? Ideally best bang for your buck under the $150 mark.

It's a long shot, but would this system be able to handle running Star Citizen on minimum requirements?

I realize the better solution would be to invest in an upgraded rig, but that isn't a possibility for him in the near future.

Any help is greatly appreciated - Thanks!

Solution
No you will probably not be able to play Star Citizen. The CPU is simply VERY VERY low end for gaming.

Getting 8gb RAM will not help because your CPU will bottleneck everything WAY before 4gb RAM does. 4gb is still enough for most all games, and is plenty for you system.

The processor is quite weak to play modern games (personal experience using a dual core processor here too and it pain in the well) but upgrading to 8 gb ram will certainly help and getting the R7 250x will help you a lot. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121852). You will atleast get 30 fps on low settings and if your brother is lucky he might make it to the medium settings. I currently have a R7 250 and i can run battlefield 4 on med settings fine but it some time lags a little but rest of the time i am getting smooth 30 fps. Hope i helped, if any further questions ask away.

You are not exactly correct here. First off please read my comment referring to the RAM. Also, your Dual core is ALOT stronger than his. Honestly his CPU will barely run games at lowest possible settings. It is not worth getting 4gb more ram that will do nothing. He really won't be gaming on this machine. Especially not Star Citizen.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. The more I keep reading about Star Citizen, the more it sounds like it will tax the CPU and GPU heavily and now I'm thinking the dual-core in the HP will be much more of a limiting factor than I originally expected. That said, I would imagine a GPU upgrade would still help tremendously if at all to play other games at regular settings. Your answers are much appreciated!

Will the current power supply be able to handle adding this? I was also considering getting a bigger card like this but I looked at a photo of the inside of his case and I'm wondering if there will be limitations on room.

No for the R7 250X you need a power supply. Although i recommend you save money for a Amd quad core, it seems that your motherboard supports that. Instead of getting a high tech graphic card get a quad core processor and buy a budget but good graphic card like R7 250, GT 630, GT 640 or R7 260. These are good cards and equipped with the right processor they can do wonders.

Thanks again for all of the insight, I've got a much clearer picture of what I'll have to do to get my brother up and running for new games that will be coming out.
