I bought a new 240 GB Intel SSD yesterday and loaded it with Windows 8. I already had a 1TB Western Digital HDD that was boosted by the integrated SSD on the motherboard (Smart Response Technology) and has Windows 7 installed. I use the PC for gaming and for music production. I would like to do more music production, but don't want to give up gaming either. I'm wondering whether it's better to use the SSD as the primary drive for gaming or music, or if it will matter. I don't have much of a problem with gaming on the Win7 drive. With music production, I will get occassional interference from the background stuff running.
My thought was to use one of the OS's stripped down and optimized for music. I was thinking that the Win7/HDD combo was better for that, mainly because of the 1TB storage space, and that an SSD would be more useful for gaming. Maybe it will make no difference at all and I should go with whatever is easiest. I also have an extra 1 TB HDD (WD Blue) I got for backup storage. Haven't even installed it yet.
Opinions?
My relevant specs are:
GA-Z68XP-UD3-iSSD (20gb) mobo
i7-2600K
8GB RAM
GTX 560Ti
Xonar Dg soundcard
I use Reaper as my DAW and Guitar Rig 5 plus Le Pou plugins for recording guitar. Simple Lexicon Lambda usb interface. Games are mostly 1 player stuff, Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2 (don't really do multiplayer with it), Arkham City. Starcraft II, Reckoning. There are more but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
