Let's say I'm building a budget PC for gaming. Is it better if I went with an lower end Intel CPU or a mid-high end CPU? The prices are pretty similar in the CPUs.

Solution
If a Haswell generation Core i5 can be fit into your budget then go for it. It does not necessarily have to be the i5-4670 / 4670k.

If you can only afford a dual Core i3 CPU, then I would recommend you look at a similarly priced 6 core AMD FX-63xx CPU. The prices should be fairly close to each other. Intel's CPUs have more processing power per core, but AMD give you more cores. Games that only uses 2 core will run better on the Core i3. Games that can use 4 or more cores of the FX-63xx will likely run just as well or better compared to the Core i3.

A lower end i5 is a good middle of the road CPU for a gaming rig. The GPU is what matters most, though. I would go with a lower CPU to get a better GPU, if I had to under a budget. An i3 with a GTX 750ti is going to do better than an i5 with, say an HD 7770.
