My laptop came with pre-installed 8 and since then I've upgraded to 8.1 four times (since Oct/ 2013). Each time there were serious compatibility issues so I restored back to 8.

Someone convinced me that the newest update to 8.1 a couple of weeks ago was a good idea.

It wasn't.

In the last 2 weeks this laptop has barely connected to the Internet. 'Can Not display the webpage' is constant. It's slowed down to a crawl. The system icons disappeared for a while-- all of them. Kaspersky AV isn't compatible. I just want to go back to pre-installed 8.

Tell me I'm making the right decision, please! Why do I have to upgrade to 8.1 when it's proven to be so problematic...?

Solution

Must confess the...

Can only suggest you go to your Laptop Manufacturer's Support Site and download all the main Drivers (Graphics,Audio, chipset, network etc.). If 8.1 not offered, then install them in turn using Compatibility Mode. (Right click each setup file and choose 'Troubleshoot Compatibility', then 'Troubleshoot Program'. Choose whatever OS the Drivers were written for...or Recommended Settings...
And did you know, Windows Defender also includes Security Essentials for Virus Protection, so you don't need 3rd party AV software. In fact they may interfere with each other...

This is an hp ENVY 17t quad core 4th gen i7 MQ 4700 processor- 16g 1 tb hd notebook PC. It's about 6 1/2 months old and when I contacted HP support re: whether this model had been tested and deemed compatible with 8.1, they could 't locate it.

I really appreciate the input and suggestions re: 8.1. But I guess what I'm asking is: I want to restore back to pre-installed 8.

I don't want to upgrade to 8.1...ever again. Each time someone convinced me to do this I (and my laptop) have suffered. Once I get back to a clean 8, isn't that enough? If I stayed connected to the Internet, it ran swiftly and without incident... can't I just leave well enough alone...? What's wrong with staying with pre-installed Windows 8?

Must confess the advantages of upgrading to 8.1 are so minimal it's certainly not worth the bother when experiencing the sort of problems you're having. I left my Desktop on 8 (Mainly for replicating problems for Tom's!) and upgraded my laptop (HP dv7-6c Quad core A8) to 8.1 with a few problems that were sorted by re-installing some drivers and running some Windows Diagnostics. You could try the Diagnostics to see if they help, if not revert to plain 8 and stick with it!

First try System File Checker
Winkey plus 'X'
Choose Command Prompt (Admin)
Type sfc /scannow then Enter

It finds and fixes errors in Windows, but doesn't always report them. Run it and see if the fault disappears after re-booting your system
If corrupt files are found that can’t be fixed, try

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (Observe spaces before /)

Re-run SFC

To view CBS Log

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

Search C drive for sfcdetails.txt or navigate to C:\Windows\System32 and scroll down
