1600MT/s memory on laptop

I have a question,
I want to upgrade my laptop memory from 8gb to 16 gb, and I was thinking that maybe I whould upgrade also the speed (my laptop has 2 slots, and supports up to 16 gb of ram, so i would have to replace both factory 4gb sticks). I was planning to buy a pair of 8 gb so-dimm 1600.

Would there be a compatibility issue? Do all new/modern laptops support ddr1600 ram?

My notebook is a Toshiba S55-A5376, but I would also know if it's possible to do this on different laptops (my friend wants to buy a HP ENVY 15-j084nr, for example, and would like to know the same)

Reguarding your laptop, I found this on the online manual:

Memory
 Configured with 8GB DDR3 1600MHz (max 16GB)
 2 main memory slots. Both slots are occupied.

So yes you can upgrade to 16GB 1600mhz memory.

For your friend's laptop, I found this on HP's website:

Memory 6GB DDR3L SDRAM (2 DIMM)
Memory Max Maximum supported = 16GB

and this on the Intel's support website for the i7-4700HQ:

Memory Types DDR3L-1333,1600

So yes both laptops can be equipped with 16GB of 1600MHz memory. Hope this helps :)

It's not necessarially a brand matter, but how new the laptop is. I have a Lenovo Y570, and lenovo is a solid brand, most of their new laptops work with 1600mhz ram, but since mine is a bit older it only accepts 1333. If I went out and bought 8gb of 1600mhz ram and popped it in my laptop, it would work just running at slightly slower speeds. The other thing is that unless you have an integrated graphics card, you wont see a massive difference between 1333 and 1600, but since your laptop supports it you might as well go with 1600 because the price difference is negligable and 1333 ram is pretty out dated at this point.
