Unfortunately, almost all versions of Windows now are hardware ID bound, meaning, upon registration with Microsoft on first boot, they are forever tied to the HWID; usually of the Motherboard or the hard drive. As well, there are always going to be driver issues that usually result in a crash from the OS not recognizing the BIOS, memory format, RAID format and other factors that are almost never similar between computers.

My best advice would simply be to call Microsoft directly about your particular windows license and see if it can migrate over. I am guessing it will be a no, but it's always good to be an optimist! XD But if yes, then all you would have to do would be to re-install the version of windows you were using before, enter the key when installing and backing up all your files to an external HDD.

Was implemented with windows Vista I believe; maybe even XP, I don't know for sure. Especially for OEM Windows licences (which I'm pretty sure almost all laptops have), you are usually limited to brand components as well since Microsoft gives them batch keys to put onto their products.
